answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 07/03/2018 answer text <p>The UK and France regularly discuss unaccompanied asylum seeking children and their vulnerabilities, including the risks of modern slavery and human trafficking at both official and ministerial level.</p><p>The UK and France signed a Treaty on 19 January at the UK-France summit, which agreed a ‘whole of route’ joint package of co-operation on migration, aimed at further strengthening our shared border and reducing the number of illegal migrants at northern French ports, as well as reducing illegal migration and tackling modern slavery and human trafficking.</p><p>As part of the Treaty, we announced a number of specific measures in respect of unaccompanied asylum seeking and refugee children. The protection of migrants in France remains the responsibility of the French Government, but we are absolutely committed to safeguarding and protecting these children.</p><p>Home Office staff escorted children on coaches during this operation, and will be visiting these centres to make sure those children who may be eligible to come to the UK continue to be assessed. In respect of Calais, the Government has been clear that unaccompanied children will be prioritised if they meet the Dublin criteria.</p><p>We work closely with the French authorities and their partner agencies to ensure all those who come to the UK from the camps in Calais are eligible under the Dublin Regulation. All individuals are referred to the UK authorities by the NGO France Terre D'asile (FTDA) and are then interviewed by French and UK officials. Basic security checks are conducted on all individuals prior to arrival, with further verification carried out once in the UK.</p><p>Where credible and clear documentary evidence of age is not available, criteria including physical appearance and demeanour are used as part of the interview process to assess age. Where we believe someone is significantly over 18, they will be refused.
