answer text
Her Majesty's Prison & Probation Service records the number of assault incidents, involving multiple people, in which at least one assault takes place. Where the evidence allows, we also record whether anyone involved is an assailant, a suspected assailant, or a victim. Others may be involved an incident without taking part in the assault, such as prisoners trying to help staff. Where it is not possible clearly to identify an aggressor or a victim, the incident is recorded as a fight and those involved as fighters.

Full details of the methods used for collating these data can be found in the ‘Guide to Safety in Custody Statistics’, available at: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/797079/safety-custody-statistics-guide.pdf
more like this

answer text
Figures showing the number of assault incidents at each prison in England and Wales between October 2017 and September 2018 are in the attached table.

We have recruited over 4,700 more prison officers since October 2016, and we now have the greatest number in post since early 2012. The Challenge, Support and Intervention Plan case management process for prisoners at risk of violence has been mandated for all prisons and will be fully in place by the end of April 2019. We are improving perimeter security and using other equipment such as body scanners to address the supply of drugs. We are confident that these initiatives, together with the many other measures that we are taking to protect our staff, will reduce the level of violence in prisons.
more like this

answer text
Data about assaults by prisoners, including those on prison staff, is published in the quarterly Safety in Custody statistics. The figures for January to March 2018 are scheduled to be published on 26 July.

The most recent statistics were published on 26 April and cover assaults to December 2017. Figures for individual prisons can be found in the data tool: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/676164/assaults-data-tool.xlsx.

We are addressing the high-levels of violence in prisons by recruiting extra staff and giving all staff the tools and training to help them reduce violence. We are investing £100 million to boost the front line and we are over half way to our target of recruiting 2,500 extra prison officers. We have invested in 5,600 body-worn cameras to help protect our prison staff, and we are working with the police and Crown Prosecution Service to prosecute prisoners who assault staff.

answer text
The number of assaults by prisoners is published in the quarterly Safety in Custody statistics. The records from which this information is drawn do not include information about whether or not the prisoner or prisoners involved had taken a psychoactive substance, because it is not possible for staff to know that at the time of the incident.

We know that the availability of psychoactive substances is a driver of violence in prisons, and we take the issue extremely seriously. We have implemented a new drug testing programme; we have invested in technology and sniffer dogs to improve detection; and we have formed a drugs task force focused on the prisons with the worst drug problems, which will tackle demand and supply. In addition, we are investing £2million in body-worn cameras, which will act as a visible deterrent against violence and assist with prosecutions. We are also introducing new-style handcuffs and piloting PAVA incapacitant spray.
more like this
