The Challenge, Support and Intervention Plan case management process for prisoners at risk of violence has been mandated for all prisons and will be fully in place by the end of April 2019. We are improving perimeter security and using other equipment such as body scanners to address the supply of drugs. This is a complex problem. We know that our new measures will take effect over time, and that we cannot expect an immediate reduction in the number of assaults. Nonetheless, we remain confident that they are the right measures, and we are introducing them as quickly as we can.</p><p> </p><p>We have recruited over 4,700 more prison officers since October 2016, and we now have the greatest number in post since early 2012. The key worker scheme is already showing promising signs of effectiveness and has started in all 92 closed adult male prisons, with over 30,000 prisoners having an assigned key worker who has dedicated time each week to work with them. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 24/01/2019 answer text <p>The Government publishes quarterly statistics on violence, self-harm and deaths in prison custody, and a more detailed annual breakdown, and both are available at:</p><p><a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/safety-in-custody-quarterly-update-to-june-2018" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/safety-in-custody-quarterly-update-to-june-2018</a>.</p><p> </p><p>The number of assaults in each prison can be seen in table 3.15 of <em>Assaults in prison custody 2000 to 2017</em>; the number of self-harm incidents in each prison is in table 2.13 of <em>Self-harm in prison custody 2004 to 2017</em>; and the number of homicides in each prison can be found in the <em>Deaths data tool</em>. I regret that the number of incidents involving staff with less than three years’ experience could be found only at disproportionate cost.</p><p> </p><p>The Government is taking unprecedented action to improve safety in prisons custody. We are investing an extra £70 million to improve safety, security and decency, and we are equipping officers with PAVA incapacitant spray to help prevent serious harm to staff and prisoners when dealing with violent incidents. We will do this through enhancing security and tackling drugs and continue our programme of decency upgrades. We are taking urgent action to make prisons safer, and assaults on our staff will never be tolerated. That is why we are working with the Police and Crown Prosecution Service to ensure successful prosecutions of those who assault them. It is also why the Government supported the recently passed Assaults on Emergency Workers (Offences) Act, which increases sentences for those who attack emergency workers, including prison officers. But the key to this must be consistent management of prisoner behaviour with clear expectations.</p><p>We are taking further measures to protect our staff, including investing in 5,600 body-worn cameras and in rigid-bar handcuffs. Early next year we will begin to equip every prison officer in the adult male prison estate with PAVA incapacitant spray. PAVA can help to prevent serious harm to staff and prisoners alike, as well as being a tool to persuade prisoners in the act of violence to stop.
