answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 15/01/2018 answer text <p>Valuations for the purposes of rating are carried out independently by the Valuation Office Agency. The majority of ratepayers have seen no change or a fall in their bills. However, for those facing increases as a result of the 2017 revaluation we have provided a £3.6 billion transitional relief scheme.</p><p>At the 2016 Budget, the Chancellor announced the biggest ever cut in business rates – worth nearly £9 billion across the next five years, taking 600,000 small businesses out of paying rates. In the Spring 2017 Budget, we announced £435 million support to businesses seeing increases in rates bills. In the Autumn 2017 Budget, the Chancellor announced that he will bring forward the switch of the annual indexation of business rates from RPI to the CPI by two years, which is worth £4.1 billion by 2023.</p><p>The Government is committed to supporting small and medium size businesses on our high streets. A joint steering group and a series of joint working groups were established with the Local Government Association in 2016 as one way, but not the only way, through which the Government could work with the local government sector on developing proposals for business rates retention. The different working groups meet on different frequencies depending on the work they are undertaking at any particular time . answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 13/07/2017 answer text <p>The Department for Communities and Local Government has been closely collaborating with stakeholders from across local government and business on the current business rates retention scheme and future direction of policy in this area.</p><p>Departmental officials have had meetings with representatives from authorities which are currently piloting 100 per cent business rates retention.</p><p>In addition to this, the Department has received over 220 responses from local authorities, local councillors and local government and business stakeholder groups on the ‘Further Consultation on 100% Business Rates Retention’, published in February 2017. Under the rates retention scheme, authorities with large business rates bases, relative to their spending needs, pay part of their business rates as a “tariff”.
