answer text
Infrastructure investment in the UK supports hundreds of thousands of jobs a year in the construction sector. Spending Review 2020 set out ambitious plans for capital investment across the UK to support jobs– from investment in the next generation of hospitals and upgrades to our roads and railways, to energy efficiency retrofits and tree planting.

HM Treasury worked closely with the Infrastructure and Projects Authority (IPA) at SR20 to scrutinise the deliverability of schemes to ensure that investment can support jobs as quickly as possible. As set out in the National Infrastructure Strategy, HM Treasury strongly encourages all government departments and their agencies to progress approved and funded projects into procurement and contract without delay (subject to good project discipline). This is supported by the IPA publishing a comprehensive National Infrastructure and Construction Pipeline, providing certainty to the market about planned procurement. The next update to the pipeline will be in Spring 2021. The government is also urging local authorities to take steps to support construction jobs in their areas by progressing funded projects as soon as practicable.

answer text
The UK has over 460,000 jobs in low carbon businesses and their supply chains. By 2030, the UK’s low carbon economy has the potential to grow at up to four times the rate of GDP growth and support up to 2 million jobs.

At my Rt. Hon. Friend Mr Chancellor of the Exchequer’s economic update, the government announced £3 billion of green investment to create thousands of green jobs and upgrade the energy efficiency of domestic and public buildings. The Green Homes Grant could support more than 100,000 green jobs, upgrade more than 600,000 homes across the country, and save households hundreds of pounds a year on their energy bills. The Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme will fund shovel-ready projects that could support up to 33,000 green jobs in sectors that will be key to delivering our net zero ambitions.

On 30 June, my Rt. Hon. Friend the Prime Minister made further announcements in support of green jobs, including a £40 million Green Recovery Challenge Fund to boost local conservation projects and create 3,000 new jobs, and safeguard a further 2,000.

answer text
The Plan for Jobs makes available up to £30 billion to support the recovery, and support jobs. The £2 billion Kickstart Scheme will create hundreds of thousands of new, fully subsidised jobs for young people across Britain. The Government has said there will be no cap on the number of places available, and urges employers to hire as many Kickstarters as possible.

Other elements of the Plan will help to support jobs, too. The Government expects the Green Homes Grant, together with the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme and the Social Housing Decarbonisation, to support around 140,000 green jobs, and cutting VAT to 5% on eligible services supplied by the tourism and hospitality sectors will help protect 2.4 million jobs.

The Government is also supporting firms who keep their furloughed workers on, with a £1,000 bonus for each furloughed employee who is still employed by the end of January next year. And the Government is supporting all unemployed people to find jobs by providing £1.2 billion to significantly enhance and expand work search support this year in Great Britain, including to double the number of work coaches to 27,000.
