answer text
The Department works with NHS England to monitor and improve access to general practice services and address regional variation. In 2016, we launched the Targeted Enhanced Recruitment Scheme, which has attracted hundreds of doctors to train in hard to recruit locations, including many rural areas, by providing a one-off financial incentive of £20,000. In 2021, there were 550 places available and through additional Government investment, there are 800 places available in 2022.

NHS England is continuing to provide structured support to practices working in the most challenging circumstances via the Accelerate Access Improvement Programme. This is prioritising support to practices delivering care in the areas of highest deprivation and with the greatest health needs.
more like this

answer text
Excluding COVID-19 vaccinations, there were an average of 1.24 million appointments per working day in July 2022, compared to 1.17 million in July 2019. We have also made £520 million available to improve access and expand general practice capacity during the pandemic. To reduce unnecessary bureaucracy for general practitioners (GPs) and increase capacity for appointments, we have expanded the range of healthcare professionals who can sign fit notes and published seven principles to reduce unnecessary burdens on GPs.

We are investing at least £1.5 billion to create an additional 50 million general practice appointments by 2024 through increasing and diversifying the workforce. General practice teams include a range of other health professionals in addition to GPs, to respond to the needs of patients and we are on schedule to recruit an additional 26,000 primary care staff.
more like this

The final report, published in 2018, concluded that there were aspects of QOF which are valued and valuable, but that improvements were necessary to deliver better patient care. ‘A five-year framework for GP contract reform to implement The NHS Long Term Plan’, published in 2019, implemented the findings of this review, including via the creation of a new Quality Improvement domain and modifying existing indicators to improve efficacy.

more like this

answer text
No formal assessment has been made. There is no recommendation for how many patients should be allocated to a general practitioner (GP), as the demand each patient places on their GP can be affected by various factors, including rurality and patient demographics. GPs form part of a multidisciplinary team, therefore ensuring the appropriate skills are available in general practice can address workload pressures and deliver appropriate patient care.
more like this

answer text
The National Health Service has been clear that general practitioner (GP) practices must provide face to face appointments, alongside remote consultations. Patients’ input into consultation type should be sought and practices should respect preferences for face to face care unless there are good clinical reasons to the contrary, such as the presence of COVID-19 symptoms.

In October 2021, we published ‘Our plan for improving access for patients and supporting general practice’. This included an additional investment of £250 million in a Winter Access Fund to increase the number of face to face appointments, while also investing in technology to make it easier for patients to see or speak to their GP.
more like this
