answer text
Getting more women into power gives voice to a marginalised section of society, creates female role models and leads to legislative change and policies that tackle gender inequalities and discrimination. Peace settlements are 35% more likely to endure for more than 15 years if women have been involved in negotiations.

Increasing women’s political participation and leadership is a foundational pillar of DFID’s Strategic Vision for Gender Equality, launched in March 2018, and is a top priority in the current cross-Government National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security.

Just 24% of national parliamentarians around the world are women. DFID programmes are supporting women to participate in politics.

In Nigeria, DFID’s ‘Women in Politics’ programme supports women elected to the National Assembly, including establishing the first women’s caucus as a forum for advocacy, policy development and training. In Afghanistan, DFID support has helped women provincial councillors who often face intimidation and violence in their work.

Women’s voice and leadership can make a real difference on issues that matter to them.

DFID has supported Amplify Change to fund women-led organisations that help women to claim their sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR). For example, through UKaid, we have given nearly 17 million women access to modern methods of family planning and supported 5.6 million girls to gain access to a decent education since 2015. We recently made the largest donor commitment ever (£50 million) to ending female genital mutilation across Africa and announced a new UK government campaign to end period poverty globally.
more like this

answer text
The UK was instrumental in securing agreement for a stand-alone goal and dedicated targets for gender equality and women’s empowerment across the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We are continually working on the advancement of SDG5, which remains a top development priority and a top priority for the UK. Our support is delivering results at scale – since 2015 UKaid has supported an estimated 3.3 million girls to gain a decent education, reached an estimated 7.3 million women and girls with humanitarian assistance and helped an estimated 9.8 million women with life-saving water, sanitation and hygiene programmes. We look forward to celebrating International Women’s Day on 8 March.

more like this

answer text
Departmental budgets are allocated, through the Spending Review, against Single Departmental Plans. Each Department is responsible for supporting, resourcing, and reporting against achievement of the SDGs, as appropriate to its mandate. The UK’s upcoming Voluntary National Review will provide a snapshot of the UK’s contribution to Global Goal 5, both domestically and internationally, and will be underpinned by data to ensure that it is robust and credible. The UK played an instrumental role in advocating for the inclusion of Goal 5 in the Sustainable Development Goals and is a world leader in supporting international progress against the targets under this Goal.
more like this
