Girls' education matters because it is one of the greatest tools for addressing discrimination against women and girls. It initiates a virtuous circle, giving women and girls a greater voice to advocate for changes in their own lives and the lives of others. Between 2015 and 2019 the UK supported 14.3 million children to gain a decent education, of which at least 5.8 million were girls.</p><p>Through its programmes, the FCDO works with whole communities, including boys and men, to change their attitudes and behaviours towards girls and women. However, gender bias and discrimination is widespread within and across education systems, from teacher recruitment and training to curriculum and material development, to gender-based violence in and around schools. FCDO staff ensure that the teaching and learning materials we fund are inclusive and reflect gender equality. As the effects of the COVID-19 crisis play out, the socio-economic impact on girls has become increasingly clear and the focus on girls' education across the world is more important than ever.</p><p>Difficult decisions have been necessary to identify the savings needed to ensure we meet the 0.7 per cent Official Development Assistance (ODA) commitment this year. As a result, some programme spend for this financial year has been reduced or deferred. The Foreign Secretary chaired a review process across government looking at all strands of the ODA budget, evaluating the impacts of spend and making sure the UK can maintain operational capacity. UK Aid to the Palestinian Authority (PA) helps to ensure it can deliver essential services, including by the contributing to the salaries of vetted education and healthcare professionals in the West Bank. We have regularly raised our concerns about allegations of incitement in Palestinian textbooks, which the Foreign Secretary did most recently with the PA on 25 August. The UK has announced £20 million for the UN Children’s Fund crisis appeal, which includes education, and a further £5 million to the Education Cannot Wait fund to support emergency education in fragile contexts.
