answer text <p>Her Majesty's Government is in regular contact with a wide range of Western and African countries concerning the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).</p><p>The UK supported the United Nations Security Council Press Statement on the Electoral Process in DRC, which was issued on 28 November. On Wednesday 6 December, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office hosted a meeting of Great Lakes Special Envoys from Europe and the US to discuss the DRC's recently published electoral timetable. This will also be discussed at the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels on Monday 11 December.</p> more like this

We applaud the perseverance of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Congo (CENCO) in achieving this. I said in my statement of 6 January, it is imperative that this deal is implemented as soon as possible so that elections can take place this year.</p><p>I visited the DRC last year with Parliamentary Under Secetary of State for International Development, James Wharton MP and met with senior government and opposition figures. We both pressed the need for Kabila to step down and hold elections, as well as respecting human rights. We continue to encourage the Government and the opposition to cooperate and consolidate the progress they have already made.</p><p>The UK has earmarked £11.4 million to support a transparent electoral process provided that a realistic budget and timetable are released, and all the conditions set out in the Constitution and in UN Security Council Resolution 2277 are met. The EU and a number of nations, including the US have made similar pledges.</p>

answer text <p>DFID has supported the current election process in the Democratic Republic of Congo since 2015, focussing on increasing democratic representation of women and youth, protecting human rights defenders and broadening the Catholic Church’s electoral observation activities. In early 2016, DFID announced that additional funding of £6.6million could be made available to support the Electoral Commission in updating the electoral register. answer text <p>DFID Parliamentary Under Secretary of State Mr Wharton visited the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on the 18-20 November. He met the Prime Minister, the Minister for Interior/Security, the main opposition leader, the speaker of the lower house of Parliament and leader of President Kabila's political grouping. Mr Wharton discussed elections with all interlocutors and pressed them to show the flexibility necessary to reach an inclusive deal on timely elections and transition.</p><p>I visited the DRC in August where I discussed elections with the DRC government and pressed them to make more progress towards holding timely elections. I also met opposition figures, and emphasised the importance of elections to the DRC's continuing development. The embassy in Kinshasa maintains a regular dialogue with the Government of the DRC about the postponement of the elections to April 2018.</p><p>EU funding for elections is dependent on the DRC government meeting conditions set out in UN Security Council resolution 2277. The conditions include a transparent election process based on an inclusive political agreement and a clear timetable approved by stakeholders. We are working closely with EU partners in support of this.</p>

answer text <p>The UK has raised the postponement of presidential elections with the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on a number of occasions. Mr Wharton, the Department for International Development Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, visited the DRC in November, and I visited in August. We met government officials including the current Prime Minister, the Vice-PM for Interior/Security and the Minister for Justice. Mr Wharton and I pressed the DRC government to make more progress towards holding timely elections in 2017, as proposed by technical experts, and to respect the human rights of protesters. Furthermore, we emphasised the importance of elections to the DRC’s continuing development.</p><p>Additionally, our Special Envoy to the Great Lakes Region, Danae Dholakia, attended International Conference of the Great Lakes Region in Luanda in October where she lobbied the DRC government on similar lines. Our Embassy in Kinshasa maintains a constant dialogue with the government on resolving the current political crisis peacefully.</p>
