answer text <p>We have followed Gao’s case closely and welcomed his release from prison on 7 August 2014. We are concerned by reports that he has been in ill health since his release, and that his movement is restricted. We urge the Chinese authorities to allow him access to adequate medical care, and to ensure that his rights to freedom of movement and communication are duly protected. <br><br>UK officials have repeatedly raised Gao’s case with the Chinese government, including during the most recent UK-China Human Rights Dialogue in May 2014, and again prior to his release. We highlight our range of human rights concerns in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s Annual Report on Human Rights and Democracy, and the quarterly updates to it.</p> more like this

answer text <p>We monitor the human rights situation in China closely and engage with a wide range of stakeholders. We have ongoing concerns about restrictions to civil and political rights in China which we raise regularly with Chinese counterparts. We last held the UK-China Human Rights Dialogue on 19-20 May 2014, allowing us to raise concerns directly with Chinese authorities. We also raise our concerns publicly through the Annual Report on Human Rights and Democracy and updates to it. Our Embassy in Beijing has contact with a range of civil society groups in China.</p><p>Ministers regularly raise our concerns with counterparts, including during high-level bilateral exchanges.</p> more like this

answer text <p> </p><p>The UK government works with business to provide guidance for companies to meet their obligations to respect human rights throughout their operations. Recent changes to the Companies Act have strengthened requirements for company reporting to include these issues.</p><p> </p><p>DFID has developed a package of activities - including engagement with clothing retailers - to address unsafe working conditions in the garment sector in Bangladesh, following the Rana Plaza disaster in 2013, which will have wider benefits. We believe that freedom of thought, conscience and religion is a fundamental human right, and continue to raise our concerns with Chinese counterparts.</p><p>We raised our particular concerns about religious buildings in China directly with Chinese authorities during the UK-China Human Rights Dialogue on 19-20 May. answer text <p>We have not made recent specific representations on animal welfare issues in China. However the UK is a leading supporter of co-ordinated international efforts to protect animal welfare. We hosted a high level conference on the Illegal Wildlife Trade in London in February 2014, and over 40 countries, including China, participated. Chinese authorities have since passed a new law making the consumption of rare wild animals an offence, punishable by ten years in prison.</p><p> </p> more like this

answer text <p>My rt. hon. Friend the Secretary of State met with Premier Li and various Chinese companies to discuss areas of on-going cooperation within the nuclear power sector. answer text <p>Premier Li Keqiang's visit to the UK for the UK-China Summit has brought our two countries closer together in a partnership for growth, reform and innovation. During the visit, £14 billion of trade and investment deals were signed between UK and Chinese firms. London's position as the leading offshore Renminbi (RMB) trading hub was strengthened by the appointment of China Construction Bank as an RMB clearing bank in London. Premier Li's visit has also deepened our cooperation on innovation, as well as on key global issues including through a landmark Joint Statement on Climate Change and through positive discussions with the Prime Minister, my right hon.
