answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 29/03/2018 answer text <p>The Government’s commitment to funding cancer research has not changed because of the referendum.</p><p> </p><p>Rare and paediatric cancer research, along with all cancer research, is a strong priority for the Government including through the National Institute for Health Research, which has invested £745 million in cancer research from 2010/11 to 2015/16.</p><p> </p><p>My Rt. hon. Friend the Prime Minister has made it clear that we want to work closely with Europe in science and research, stating in a speech on 3 March: “the UK is also committed to establishing a far-reaching science and innovation pact with the EU, facilitating the exchange of ideas and researchers. This would enable the UK to participate in key programmes alongside our EU partners”.</p><p> </p><p>My Rt. hon. Friend the Chancellor has also said that the Treasury will guarantee EU structural and investment funding, promised before the Autumn Statement. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 16/10/2017 answer text <p>To retain the UK’s position as a world leader in research and innovation we recognise that the UK needs to continue to attract the brightest and best with high level skills who can support the research and innovation sector.</p><p>On 6 September the government published Collaboration on science and innovation - a future partnership paper, which is intended to start a full and open discussion with the EU about all of the options for continued collaboration. The UK will look to build on its unique relationship with the EU and establish an agreement on science and innovation that ensures the valuable research links between us continue to grow. The PRP commissions research to inform the development and implementation of policy, and the Department’s investment in cancer research is mainly through the NIHR.</p><p> </p><p>Spend on research funded directly by NIHR is categorised by Health Research Classification System (HRCS) health categories including ‘cancer’. There are no HRCS health sub-categories such as for bowel cancer and other specific cancer sites and information on total annual NIHR spend on research on specific cancer sites is not held. A figure for total NIHR cancer research spend in 2016/17 is not yet available.
