answer text <p>The Prime Minister has been clear that safeguarding the rights of UK nationals living in the EU, and EU citizens living in the UK, was her first priority for negotiations.</p><p><strong> </strong></p><p>We have reached an agreement with the EU on the rights of UK nationals in the EU, as set out in the Withdrawal Agreement, which we have drafted into legal text. The agreement confirms that any UK national resident in the EU by December 2020 will be able to continue living their lives broadly as they do now in their Member State of residence.</p><p><br>It will be for each Member State to determine how they will implement these rights for UK nationals but the provisions of the Withdrawal Agreement will ensure any new arrangements for UK nationals are transparent, smooth and streamlined. We would like all Member States to start to put plans in place to secure the status of UK nationals in the EU, and we will continue to seek details on their progress so that we can inform UK nationals.</p><p> </p>

answer text <p>Although not covered by the draft Withdrawal Agreement on citizens’ rights, as a matter of domestic policy, where family members of UK nationals who have exercised their Treaty rights in another EU Member State are lawfully resident in the UK under regulation 9 of the 2016 Regulations by 31 December 2020, it is our intention that they will be eligible to apply for status under the EU Settlement Scheme.</p><p>Those who arrive in the UK after 31 December 2020 will be subject to the future immigration arrangements which are yet to be decided.</p> more like this

answer text <p>We have reached an agreement with the EU on citizens’ rights that will protect those EU citizens and their family members who are lawfully resident in the UK by 31 December 2020. We will introduce a new settlement scheme under UK law for EU citizens and their family members to secure their rights under the Withdrawal Agreement.</p><p>Although not covered by citizens rights’ agreement with the EU, it is our intention that family members of UK nationals who have exercised their free movement rights in another EU Member State before returning to the UK before 31 December 2020, as per <em>Surinder Singh</em> case law, will be eligible to apply for the UK’s settlement scheme. We will provide details in advance of the scheme opening on the eligibility of those who benefit from the <em>Surinder Singh</em> judgment to apply for the settlement scheme.</p><p>Currently, non-EU born spouses of British citizens returning to the UK from another EU member state under the <em>Surinder Singh</em> judgment are not required to apply for a right of residence and therefore no estimate of numbers is available.</p>

answer text <p>Since the referendum, the Government has been reaching out to UK nationals in the EU at meetings, events and through digital channels. Our embassies and Ambassadors have engaged extensively with UK nationals in their host countries and since January 2018, almost 10,000 UK nationals have attended over 40 face to face outreach events. Digital outreach has reached thousands more.</p><p><strong> </strong></p><p>A wide range of questions were asked at this particular event in Paris. These related to the agreement on Citizens’ Rights and other matters related to our exit from the European Union.</p><p><strong> </strong></p><p>The agreement on Citizens’ Rights, as set out in the Withdrawal Agreement text, provides certainty on the rights of UK nationals currently living in the EU.</p><p> </p> more like this

This page is regularly updated and provides the latest information and guidance on how the UK’s exit from the EU might impact on UK nationals living in the EU. The page also includes detail of the citizens’ rights agreement, which will provide UK nationals with more certainty about residence, healthcare, pensions and other benefits.<br><br></p><p>The Government is also using other communication channels to engage with UK nationals in the EU, reaching out to UK nationals at meetings, events and online. Ministers from the Department for Exiting the European Union have met delegates from groups representing UK nationals in the EU, to hear their concerns.
