answer text
Evan Gershkovich's arrest further demonstrates Russia's lack of media freedom, and the UK calls for his immediate release. Mr Gershkovich is a US national and we will continue to support the US, who lead on consular support to him, with efforts to secure his release. On 17 April, the Foreign Secretary criticised Mr Gershkovich's arrest and said it showed a 'complete disregard for media freedom'. The UK has co-signed several statements as part of the Media Freedom Coalition, most recently on World Press Freedom Day, condemning Mr Gershkovich's detention. We have also called for Mr Gershkovich's release at the UN General Assembly.
more like this

answer text
Delays can be caused by a number of factors, at Easter this was principally due to high levels of demand exceeding capacity to handle, together with many coaches arriving well before their allotted sailing times. The first weekend of the Easter holidays saw higher than expected coach volumes travelling outbound via the port of Dover leading to longer processing times for border checks. New systems and processes to handle coaches were implemented at the Port for May half-term leading to minimal delays.

more like this

answer text
Bank and public holidays provide an opportunity for people right across the UK to get outside and explore new parts of the country. Domestic, overnight trips make an important contribution to our tourism and hospitality industries, and the wider economy. For example, British residents made 100 million overnight trips in England between April and December 2021, contributing a total of £22.2 billion in spend.

The Inter-Ministerial Group on the Visitor Economy has been established to facilitate greater cooperation across government, in order to assess how best to support the visitor economy, and how to drive growth in the tourism sector.

The Government regularly receives requests for additional bank and public holidays, but we believe that the current pattern of bank holidays is well established and accepted.
more like this

answer text
For Nationally Significant Infrastructure cases, the Department has three months from receiving a planning report to making a Development Consent Decision. If the Department cannot reach a decision in that time, it may extend the deadline and must inform Parliament that it is doing so. In 2022 four decisions were made following extensions, averaging 90 days each, and three decisions were made within the three month deadline. Smaller projects do not come to this Department but apply to the Local Authority for planning permission in the usual way. This Department does not hold information on those cases nor on the time it takes to move from consent to build.
more like this

We are appalled by reports of the regime's increased detentions of Baha'is, as well as expropriation of land and destruction of homes of the Baha'i community. On 20 December 2022, the Prime Minister's Special Envoy for Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB), Fiona Bruce, expressed the UK's condemnation of Iran's imprisonment of Baha'i leaders.
