<p>The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) maintains a central record of the volumes of
completed prosecutions, or caseload, as a count of the number of defendants. The table
below shows the number of prosecutions for both the 12 months ending September 2008

by the CPS have changed significantly in the period between 2008 and 2018. Prosecutions
for more serious and complex cases have risen, including a 5% increase in homicide,
a 17% increase in fraud and forgery and a 28% increase in sexual offences cases. During
the same period, minor motoring cases have fallen by 74% as responsibility for prosecuting
some of these cases has transferred to the police.</p>
