As a first step, we are increasing public investment in research and development (R&D) from around £9.5bn last year to around £12.5bn in 2021/22 – increasing public R&D spending as a share of GDP each year and making a total increase of £7bn over five years. This will be the biggest ever increase in public funding of R&D. In 2018, we will publish a roadmap that sets out how Government and industry will work together to reach the 2.4% target by 2027.

more like this

answer text
Maintained nursery schools make a valuable contribution to improving the lives of some of our most disadvantaged children. The effect of the 30 hours entitlement on their budgets will depend on the extent to which they are directly involved in delivery of the entitlement and the take up of the entitlement by parents in the local area.

Maintained nursery schools can choose to offer the 30 hours entitlement themselves, as can all early years providers. However, if they cannot or do not want to offer the whole entitlement themselves, we would encourage them to consider a range of options for being involved in the delivery of the 30 hours entitlement, including working in partnership with other providers.
more like this

answer text
The apprenticeship reforms introduced earlier this year are the largest changes to apprenticeships the government has ever made. We are transforming the skills landscape and in light of these changes, it would premature to draw definitive conclusions on the basis of the limited data available. We fully expect there to be a period of adjustment while employers decide how to maximise the opportunities these reforms present them.

We have been working hard to support employers in training and recruiting new apprentices. There have been over 1.1 million apprenticeship starts since May 2015 and we still aim to achieve 3 million apprenticeship starts in England by 2020.
more like this

answer text
The government is determined to closing the gender pay gap, which is currently at 18.4%.

The calculation of the national gender pay gap, based on the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings, does not include employees whose earnings are affected by absence from work, such as through maternity leave. Such employees should therefore not artificially inflate the gender pay gap.

However, evidence suggests that more broadly, women’s reduced labour market participation is the biggest known driver of the gender pay gap, which is in part, a result of women taking on the bulk of caring responsibilities.

The UK has one of the most generous Maternity Leave offers in the world, and we have also introduced Shared Parental Leave in order to provide parents with more choice and flexibility in how they divide care between them in the first year of their child’s life.
more like this

answer text
Investment in mental health is increasing, and being spent and this Government has prioritised mental health for children and young people. We are making an additional £1.4 billion available over 2015/16 – 2019/20 which is being used to expand and improve mental health services for children and young people.

The recently published Transforming Children and Young People’s Mental Health Provision: a Green Paper on 4 December 2017 contains proposals to further increase early intervention and support for children and young people experiencing or at risk of mental health problems. The proposals as set out in the Green Paper on children and young people’s mental health would cost £215 million over the next three years towards the creation of Mental Health Support Teams, piloting a four week waiting time standard and rolling out mental health first aid training to primary schools.

We will make funding available to fund the full cost of the final proposals. We will also provide up to £15-20 million each year from 2019 to cover costs of training Designated Senior Leads in schools and colleges, until all schools and colleges have had the chance to train a lead (we expect total funding to be up to £95 million).
