The discharge of ships’ ballast water into the sea is controlled through the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships Ballast Water and Sediments. The Government supports this Convention and welcomes its entry into force internationally on 8 September 2017. Work is ongoing in the UK to implement the requirements of the convention through domestic legislation.
