answer text
The English Baccalaureate (EBacc) performance measure, which includes languages, has seen the proportion of GCSE entries from pupils in state-funded schools in a modern foreign language (MFL) increase from 40% in 2010 to 46% in 2018. The reformed national curriculum now makes it compulsory for pupils in maintained schools to be taught a foreign language in key stage 2.

The £4.8 million MFL Pedagogy Pilot commenced in December 2018. It is managed by the newly appointed MFL Centre for Excellence and is run through 9 school led hubs, to improve uptake and attainment in languages at key stages 3 and 4. The department has also launched a pilot project in MFL undergraduate mentoring for secondary school pupils to drive up participation in the subject, specifically targeting areas of high disadvantage to extend access to languages for all pupils.

Recruiting MFL teachers is a priority for the government. The government offers generous financial incentives for languages teaching, including scholarships in MFL worth £28,000, and tax-free bursaries, typically worth up to £26,000. The government is also working in partnership with Spain’s Ministry of Education and Vocational Training to deliver Spain’s Visiting Teachers Programme to provide schools with access to a pool of qualified teachers from Spain who are able to teach MFL. In addition to this, the department has a Teacher Subject Specialism Training programme which aims to improve the subject knowledge of non-specialist teachers and returning teachers in MFL.

The department is also continuing to promote the value of language qualifications to students who are choosing their GCSEs. The department recently published and promoted a guidance leaflet for parents, attached, which explains why studying a language, as part of the EBacc, broadens opportunities in both education and employment. In February, the department drew attention to the benefits of studying a language among 13 to 14 year olds through a social media campaign.

We most recently made statements expressing these concerns on 26 February with US, Norway and Canada, and on 28 February alongside our EU partners. In addition the Sudanese ambassador was summoned to the Foreign Office on 7 March to register the depth of our ongoing concern. We will continue to urge the Government of Sudan to respect the Sudanese people's right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, and to make political reforms that address the legitimate concerns of the protestors.
more like this

The Home Secretary was clear in his statement to the Commons that our support for Lebanon will remain unaffected by the decision to extend proscription. We remain committed to the security and economic stability of Lebanon and the region, and continue to work closely with our Lebanese partners towards these goals. The Minister for the Middle East and North Africa visited Lebanon last week where he underlined the UK's commitment to supporting Lebanon.
more like this

We continue to urge the release of all such detainees as part of the implementation of the 12 September peace agreement. We have raised Mr Biar's case with the Government of South Sudan; calling for immediate release, for due process, and access to legal representation. We are aware of recent reports of charges being brought against Mr Biar. To reinforce the importance we place on due process and transparency, UK officials will attend hearings where possible and we will encourage our international partners to do so too.
more like this

answer text
The United Kingdom strongly supports political reform in Armenia. The Minister for Europe and the Americas discussed reform and the importance of democratic institutions with Armenia's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Zohrab Mnatsakanyan, at the Munich Security Conference this month. Armenia was included in the Good Governance Fund for the first time in 2018. The Fund provides up to £3 million of support per year for programmes in Armenia that strengthen parliamentary oversight and judicial reform, and support economic reforms in areas such as taxation. The UK provided targeted funding to support preparations for the December 2018 parliamentary elections through the Electoral Support Project in Armenia, implemented by the UN Development Programme. Following the elections, British Embassy Yerevan continues to work closely with the Government of Armenia and other donors to identify areas where UK support can provide the greatest benefit.
more like this
