answer text
A Northwest Runway at Heathrow will improve the UK’s connectivity, with more frequent services to important global destinations benefitting passengers and freight-operators across the UK. While Heathrow expansion will help to secure the UK’s status as a global aviation hub, it will also see airports across the country continuing to develop their point-to-point networks.

The Department’s forecasts show that passenger numbers and international flights at non-London airports are expected to increase by 80 per cent and 71 per cent respectively between 2016 and 2050 with a third runway at Heathrow. The Government recognises that all three expansion schemes in the South East are projected to result in regional airports experiencing lower growth in flights than they would have otherwise seen, but strong growth is still expected at non-London airports relative to today.

more like this

answer text
The need to pay men and women equally for the same work has been required by statute for nearly 50 years, and we expect employers in the private sector to comply with equal pay law.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has a Statutory Code of Practice on Equal Pay, and provides extensive advice guidance on its website to ensure employers know what is required to comply with the law. The EHRC and the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas) also provide guidance to help individuals understand their rights and take action if they believe that they are being discriminated against in the pay they receive.

Employees who are concerned that they may not be being paid fairly can seek authoritative and free advice from Acas, before deciding whether to bring a claim before an Employment Tribunal. Where an employer is found to have breached equal pay law, an Employment Tribunal can order it to carry out an equal pay audit.

Our requirement for all larger employers to publish their gender pay gap is helping to increase transparency of all the factors underlying the endemic differences in pay between men and women.

answer text
The Legal Aid Agency (LAA) monitors capacity across criminal legal aid contracts on a regular basis and takes action to ensure ongoing availability of advice to the public by working closely with its existing providers to ensure adequate provision.

The LAA was recently notified by West Midlands Police of its decision to close Solihull Custody Suite for a period of 6 months from Monday 16th July 2018. West Midlands Police have confirmed that most of those arrested and previously taken to Solihull will generally be taken either to Coventry or Perry Barr, depending on the location of the arrest.

Following this announcement, the LAA has concluded a consultation with duty scheme members of the Solihull, Birmingham and Coventry Scheme Areas. As a result of that consultation the LAA has decided to implement the approach that the majority of respondents favoured, namely the merging of the Solihull and Coventry duty schemes.

The LAA anticipates that these arrangements will ensure that current levels of advice provision remain in place for those that need it in Solihull and Coventry, but will continue to monitor to ensure adequate provision.

answer text
The Department for Transport has allocated over £1.6 billion to upgrade and improve local highways in the West Midlands between 2010/11 and 2017/18.

However, secondly, this figure excludes funding for strategic roads that pass through the West Midlands, which are managed by Highways England. However, it is not possible to cost work exclusively within the West Midlands fully, as Highways England does not hold data on the allocated spend for schemes within the boundary.

Thirdly, Birmingham City Council has a Highways Maintenance Private Finance Initiative contract from 2010 to 2035, towards which the Department for Transport is providing over £1.1 billion over that period. The Department pays annual PFI credits of about £50 million, and payments to date total £392 million. Birmingham City Council provides further investment from its own resources.

Fourth, the Government provides Growth Deal funding to Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) covering the West Midlands metropolitan area up to 2020/21, these are:

• Black Country £218m

• Greater Birmingham and Solihull £433m

• Coventry and Warwickshire £132m

This funding is provided for infrastructure to support growth, including new roads and road improvement schemes.

Data for the allocation of Government funding to roads in Coventry South constituency is not available as the information is not disaggregated to constituency level.
