In the nearer term, there are currently a number of new bi-mode trains being delivered or on order. The rail industry expects rolling stock to typically have an expected life in the range of 30 to 35 years. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 12/09/2017 answer text <p>Network Rail is continuing to invest in the Midland Mainline in Control Period 5 and 6 with over £1bn of investment planned including electrification of the route from Bedford to Kettering and Corby and additional track capacity. The majority of the planned journey time savings will still be realised through the provision of an additional sixth long distance train path each hour, allowing the industry to make more efficient use of the infrastructure, as well as allowing higher capacity services to run. These capacity and connectivity improvements are expected to be the key driver of the economic impacts of the Midland Main Line programme.</p><p> </p><p>By also introducing the new fleet of bi-mode intercity trains from 2022, we are maximising the benefits of the largest upgrade of the Midland Main Line since it opened in 1870. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 11/09/2017 answer text <p>Pending Transport for the North’s formal establishment as the first statutory Sub-national Transport Body, co-operation on investment planning takes place through our existing partnership with Rail North.</p><p> </p><p>The Government has not made any changes to our upgrade plans for the Transpennine Route. We are currently working with Rail North and Network Rail to develop very significant improvements for rail passengers on this route with phased introduction from December 2022. These could be the result of investment in new trains, electrification or other infrastructure work. The options will be costed by December, ahead of a decision next year.</p><p> </p><p>The upgrade aims to deliver major reductions in journey times (such as a target time of 40 minutes for fast trains from Manchester to Leeds, and 62 minutes from Manchester to York), the ability to run more frequent and longer trains offering more seats on both long distance and local services and improvements to overall performance on the whole route.
