answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 16/03/2020 answer text <p>NHS England commissions a total of 15 adult respiratory extra corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) beds per annum from five providers in England (with a further provider in Scotland), as well as paediatric respiratory ECMO beds from five providers in England (again with further provider in Scotland). Whilst there is no set number of beds per provider because the number of paediatric cases is very small, there are typically no more than three patients requiring respiratory ECMO at any one time. In periods of high demand, adult and paediatric capacity can be increased in line with agreed standard operating procedure.</p><p> </p><p>Highly specialised beds will only be needed by a minority of affected patients. Clinical priority is the main determinant of when patients should be treated followed by the chronological order of when they were added to the list.</p><p>NHS England’s Elective Care Transformation Programme is supporting hospital eye service departments to better manage demand and minimise the risk of significant harm to patients. There were 13.2 million NHS sight tests carried out in 2018/19, an increase of 1.5% on the previous year.</p><p>The current NHS access standard for referral to elective treatment requires that patients will be seen within a maximum waiting time of 18 weeks.
