Reports estimate that there have been over 1,170 incidents of economic suppression against Iranian Baha'is since 2005. This includes recent reports of an increased number of Baha'i students being expelled from university, as well as the denial of access to higher education for adherents of the Baha'i faith, and reports of students being forced to renounce their faith in order to further their education. The British Government supports the UN Special Rapporteur's assessment that discrimination against the Baha'i community in Iran is aggravated by lack of recognition for the Baha'i faith in the Iranian constitution. The UK engages with India on human rights issues, including religious freedom and minority rights, both bilaterally and through the EU. Our High Commission in New Delhi monitors the human rights situation in India and maintains a dialogue with the Indian National Commission for Minorities often via our Consulate General in the country.</p><p>FCO officials in New Delhi also regularly meet senior faith leaders to discuss issues such as religious tolerance, including most recently with a representative from a Christian organisation in India in June. UN Security Council Resolution 2334 addresses settlements while also calling for an end to incitement and terror. The resolution was passed on 23 December and asks the Secretary-General to report to the Council every three months on the implementation of its provisions. We will continue to support all efforts to reduce the level of violence in Syria, and use all diplomatic tools to work for a political solution which allows Syrians to decide their own future. The UK has played a leading role in the UN Security Council, supporting resolutions aimed at improving humanitarian access, civilian protection and investigating chemical weapons attacks.</p><p>We will continue to pursue accountability in Syria, including through support for robust EU sanctions against the Asad regime. With UK support, the EU now has sanctions in place against 240 persons and 67 entities linked to the violent repression of civilians in Syria. The UK will maintain support for the UN Commission of Inquiry which is reporting on human rights violations and abuses; and the International Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM) whose role is to investigate and collect evidence of crimes committed in Syria. The UK is contributing to the start-up costs of the IIIM.</p><p>The UK continues to play a leading role in the fight against Daesh, which has been guilty of so many atrocities against civilians. We and the Coalition against Daesh take all allegations of civilian casualties seriously and ensure they are subsequently investigated. All possible precautions are taken to minimise the risk of civilian casualties when conducting any form of military operation. However an Amnesty International report published on 11 April estimated that the number of executions carried out in China each year numbers in the &quot;thousands&quot;, and is more than the rest of the world combined.</p><p>The UK opposes the death penalty in all circumstances and we continue to urge the Chinese authorities to reduce their use of the death penalty and provide details of the numbers of executions in China. We last raised these concerns at the UK-China Human Rights Dialogue in October 2016, which I attended.</p><p>Through our network of diplomatic posts, the UK is working with Chinese legal experts and the Chinese judiciary to support legislative and judicial reforms to limit the use of the death penalty.
