answer text
The UK is working with international and EU partners to assess the current levels of migration in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) and identify where the UK could provide support. The latest UN figures estimate, as of September, 16,144 refugee and migrant arrivals in 2018, of which 4000 – 4,400 remain in country. We are concerned by attempts by politicians to politicise the migration issue. Along with international partners the UK has urged, BiH politicians to work together to address the challenges posed by migration, rather than use them for political ends.
more like this

We want justice to be done for crimes under international law committed in Burma. We will continue to work with our international partners to ensure this, exploring all options. We are working in the UN Security Council to ensure accountability, including by looking at the option of an ad hoc tribunal, while also pushing for accelerated progress on refugee returns. We assess that there is not currently sufficient support within the Security Council for the creation of an ad hoc tribunal.
more like this

answer text
The UK has pushed for strong language on sexual and gender based violence in recent UN resolutions. Where appropriate, we will seek to include sexual and gender based violence in sanctions designation criteria more widely. The designation criteria for sanctions regimes are specific to each circumstance and situation. Where there is widespread and/or systematic cases of sexual and gender based violence, sanctions designation criterion can be used to address its perpetrators. Examples of such are found in UN sanctions regimes in the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan. Preventing sexual violence, plays a critical part in achieving peace, stability and security in any country and it is vital that we continue explore the use of sanctions to achieve this goal. Ministers will continue to engage with the UN Security Council on this issue and will make efforts to ensure that it remains a high priority.
more like this

answer text
In financial year 2017-18, the UK contributed £1.26 million to UN programming to combat conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV). This included £480,000 to the Team of Experts on the Rule of Law and Sexual Violence in Conflict and £600,000 to UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights as part of ongoing multi-year commitments. In addition, the UK provided £528,000 to the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) to support a range of activities and military training on gender issues, including CRSV. The UN Action against Sexual Violence in Conflict network (UN Action) has not been one of the recipients of UK funding on PSVI for financial years 2017/18 and 18/19. We continue to review our choice of implementers and have regular discussions with UN Action.

The UK welcomes the UN Secretary-General’s comprehensive report on CRSV and endorses his recommendation on sustainable and regular funding to tackle CRSV. The UK is already working with the UN to ensure many of the issues covered in his report feature prominently at the UK-hosted international meeting in 2019.

answer text
The UK is committed to ensuring that those responsible for violations of international law and human rights abuses in Syria are held to account. The UK strongly supports the work of the UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria whose reports have shone a light on the most serious human rights violations in the Syrian conflict. On 23 March the UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution welcoming the work of the UN Commission of Inquiry and renewing its mandate for another year. The resolution was presented by the UK on behalf of France, Germany, Italy, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the UK and the US.

The UK has publicly expressed its support for referring the situation in Syria to the International Criminal Court (ICC). In May 2014, the UK co-sponsored a UN Security Council resolution to refer all those responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Syria, regardless of affiliation, to the ICC. Russia and China chose to veto this resolution. In support of a future process of justice, the UK co-sponsored a UN General Assembly resolution establishing a new international, impartial and independent mechanism to support the investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the most serious crimes. In partnership with other donor countries, we are funding the collection of documentary evidence for use in any legal procedures in the future.

answer text
Through the Conflict Pool and its successor, the Conflict, Stability and Security Fund, the United Kingdom has provided over £8 million in funding to projects related to the training of Syrians to collect evidence of human rights violations and abuses. This includes the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative, capacity building for doctors in producing evidence of torture and rape, enabling survivors to find access to psychosocial support networks, expanding local networks of Syrian human rights defenders, and support for justice and accountability.

The Department for International Development is also providing up to £25 million from 2015 to 2018 to UN Population Fund (UNFPA) to strengthen the prevention of - and response to – gender based violence (GBV), and provide sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services for women and girls. The project aims to ensure that survivors of GBV receive the vital medical, psychosocial, and security services they need. It establishes safe spaces for women and girls across Syria as well as supports hospitals and mobile health units to deliver vital SRH services. In addition, UNFPA coordinates the wider GBV response in Syria at the national and regional level.
