answer text
The UK, in coordination with partners including the African Union, US, EU and the UN, is supporting the Federal Government of Somalia's programme to counter al-Shabaab and pursue economic and political reform. As the Debt Relief Champion for Somalia, we have helped unlock almost $2 billion of investments from the World Bank since 2020, strengthening Somalia's economy by improving the business environment, building critical infrastructure and improving access to finance. Since 2022, the UK has committed £47.5million to the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), which has played a key role in supporting Somalia's security from the threat posed by al-Shabaab. The UK, alongside the European Commission and others, was instrumental in tackling the threat of piracy off the coast of Somalia and bringing a dramatic decline in attacks, including through its leading role in the Contact Group for Piracy and funding for the UN Office on Drugs and Crime's Counter Piracy Programme.

answer text
We are unable to comment on individual cases. We are aware that there are British nationals, including children, in IDP (Internally Displaced Persons) camps in north east Syria. The FCDO advises against all travel to Syria and there is no consular support available from within Syria, therefore we cannot accurately account for the number of British nationals there.

The UK Government will seek to facilitate the return of British unaccompanied minors and orphans to the UK where feasible, subject to national security concerns, nationality and identity checks and on a case-by-case basis.
more like this

answer text
The UK notes the abuse of migrants and refugees in Libya and the inhumane conditions in detention centres. The Independent Fact-Finding Mission on Libya is assessing human rights abuses and violations in detention centres. The UK co-sponsored the renewal of the Fact Finding Mission's mandate in July. We continue to urge the interim Government of National Unity to take steps to end the exploitation and abuse of migrants and to implement a better functioning system that respects human rights. We support the UN's call for detention centres across Libya to be closed, and call on all parties to engage with the UN and the humanitarian community so that all migrants and refugees can be evacuated safely in accordance with international human rights law.
more like this
