answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 03/05/2018 answer text <p>In July 2017, the Government published the UK Plan for tackling roadside nitrogen dioxide concentrations and announced a £255 million Implementation Fund for 28 local councils to accelerate their air quality plans in order to achieve compliance with legal NO<sub>2</sub> limits as soon as possible. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 14/03/2017 answer text <p>Local authorities already have the powers to issue fixed penalty notices of £20 to drivers who allow their vehicle engines to run unnecessarily while the vehicle is stationary, using powers under the Road Traffic (Vehicle Emissions) (Fixed Penalty) (England) Regulations 2002, and are able to use signage to discourage idling. Local authorities can also voluntarily introduce Clean Air Zones should they wish to do so using their powers under the Transport Act 2000. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 12/05/2016 answer text <p>The UK’s main air quality concerns relate to ambient concentrations of nitrogen dioxide, in particular close to busy roads, with diesel vehicles being the major source. Electric vehicles have zero exhaust emissions and offer a clear benefit in tackling this ongoing air quality challenge.</p><p> </p><p>On pollution from particulate matter, evidence is limited. Recent research suggests that battery electric vehicles have similar total emissions of particulate matter to petrol and diesel vehicles, due to their higher mass causing increased non-exhaust particulate matter. Passenger cars (including both petrol and diesel vehicles) contribute 29% of the total emissions of NO<sub>x</sub> in the UK. This advised MEPs to oppose an amendment which included the introduction of spot checks on vehicle emissions under real operating conditions, because the aim of the amendment and how it related to existing regimes was unclear. We have committed £2 billion since 2011 to increase the uptake of ultra-low emission vehicles and green transport initiatives and to support Local Authorities to take action. This has included investment in cycling schemes and low emission buses. We will publish revised air quality plans for nitrogen dioxide (NO<sub>2</sub>) by the end of this year.
