At the last Autumn Statement, the government also set out action to reduce the projected impact of policies on average household energy bills by around £30 a year from 2017.

The Department intends to publish, in due course, an update on the projected costs of policies funded through supplier levies and obligations that impact consumer energy bills. Given that much of EU energy policy supports UK energy and climate objectives it is not possible to attribute particular cost elements of bills wholly to individual EU policies.

Much EU legislation helps to keep down the level of energy bills – EU energy market liberalisation and integration and legislation such as product standards to improve energy efficiency provide significant benefits to UK consumers.

more like this

answer text
The Government introduced powers in the Energy Act 2013 to give effect to the Prime Minister’s commitment. These powers enabled the Government to make changes to supplier standard licence conditions to ensure that customers are on the cheapest tariff that is in line with their preferences. However as the necessary changes to supplier licence conditions were introduced by Ofgem in 2013, the Government has not had to exercise these powers.

Ofgem has since referred the GB energy market to the Competition and Markets Authority for a full market investigation which is due to conclude in June 2016 following the publication of the Provisional Decision on Remedies on 10 March. answer text
Providing direct help to vulnerable consumers, including the elderly to keep their energy bills down is a priority for the Department. For example, direct help is given to vulnerable consumers through energy efficiency schemes such as the Energy Company Obligation and through the Warm Home Discount scheme, where 2 million low income and vulnerable households per year receive rebates off their electricity bills. DECC officials regularly meet with other government departments to discuss helping vulnerable consumers.
more like this
