Friend the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Public Health and Primary Care recently to discuss these issues.</p><p> </p><p>Officials from the two departments have met to discuss the impact of problem gambling on several occasions and have worked together on the Review of Gaming Machines and Social Responsibility. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 22/03/2018 answer text <p>We take problem gambling very seriously and protecting vulnerable people is a key aim for the Government and the Gambling Commission.</p><p> </p><p>The rate of problem gambling among the adult population in Britain has remained relatively stable over many years, and is currently 0.8%.</p><p> </p><p>Our consultation on gaming machines and social responsibility closed in January. It made clear we will cut stakes on fixed-odds betting terminals. Actions include a full strategic review by Camelot of its National Lottery business, alongside other work to encourage participation. The report identified 0.8% of the adult population as problem gamblers, which is a similar rate to that found in the British Gambling Prevalence Survey published in 2012. The NatCen report does not provide a breakdown by venue, but problem gambling rates by activity are available in table 4.5. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 31/01/2018 answer text <p>A report from NatCen, published by the Gambling Commission in August 2017, estimated the number of adult problem gamblers in Great Britain as approximately 430,000, 0.8% of the population. The surveys that underpinned this also identified people who are at risk of problems related to their gambling behaviour but who are not classified as problem gamblers. The number of moderate-risk gamblers was 555,000, and the number of low-risk gamblers was approximately 1,430,000. Both headline rates of problem gambling and at-risk rates have been relatively stable for many years.</p><p> </p><p>In October the government published a consultation on Gaming Machines and Social Responsibility across the industry. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 19/12/2017 answer text <p>The Responsible Gambling Strategy Board (RGSB) was set up by the Gambling Commission to advise on priorities for research relating to responsible gambling. GambleAware, an independent charity, leads on commissioning and funding research into gambling-related harm and supporting education and treatment programmes, taking into account the priorities set out by the RGSB.</p><p> </p><p>RGSB’s latest research programme includes as a priority work to measure gambling-related harm more effectively. This has been commissioned by GambleAware and is expected to be published in 2018. It is intended to lead to a set of metrics which can be used to measure and monitor the impact of gambling-related harm on a wider scale. Other research published by GambleAware is available on their website at https://about.gambleaware.org/research/research-publications/ .</p><p> </p><p>The Department of Health, working with Public Health England, is also considering what scope there is for commissioning further research to better understand the impacts of gambling-related harm on health, and we will work with them.</p><p> </p><p>The Gambling Commission tracks the prevalence of problem gambling through its quarterly survey as well as the NHS Health Surveys, which capture information on problem gambling and co-morbidities such as alcohol consumption, smoking and drug use, as well as physical and mental health conditions.
