star this property answer text <p /> <p /> <p>All healthcare professionals receive training in mental health issues as part of their induction training, are required to engage in a programme of continuing medical education which includes modules on mental health issues, and have access to Mental Function Champions.</p><p> </p><p>Atos training and guidance materials are regularly reviewed and external experts including the Royal College of Psychiatrists are involved in quality assurance.</p><p> </p><p>All healthcare professionals are monitored to ensure that their work meets the required quality standards. If a problem is identified, the healthcare professional may be required to undertake tailored training, which may involve training in mental health issues if required.</p><p> </p><p>DWP staff receive training in respect of decisions concerning medical or disability issues, including mental health. Specifically learning is provided on:</p><p> </p><ul><li>understanding the WCA descriptors</li><li>gathering evidence from the claimant and medical professionals</li><li>using the evidence to apply the descriptors and determine capability for work.</li></ul><p> </p><p>Within the learning emphasis is placed on the on-going support available to Decision Makers from Atos Healthcare to interpret and understand medical information.</p><p> </p><p>In the Independent Review of the Work Capability Assessment published in December 2013, Doctor Litchfield made a number of recommendations related to training in mental health which have been accepted subject to further scoping work.</p>

star this property answer text <p /> <p /> <p>As Minister of State with the responsibility for this policy area I responded to the letter dated 21 March 2014 from the Welfare Reform Committee of the Scottish Parliament on 26 April. In this letter I:</p><p> </p><p>a) responded by explaining the importance of claimants having contact with the Department; the need to move away from the old style Incapacity Benefit; and that Employment and Support Allowance claimants, including those claimants with progressive illnesses, will be placed in the Support Group if they meet the criteria.</p><p> </p><p>b) responded that through the Evidence Based Review of the Work Capability Assessment the current descriptors were tested against an alternative assessment and what the findings indicated</p> more like this

However, this data is not sufficiently robust and reliable to make available.</p><p> </p><p>In the production of new statistics, which all the above would be, the Department works to guidelines set by the UK Statistics Authority to ensure we are able to publish statistics that meet the high quality standards expected. Departmental statisticians need to assure themselves of the quality of administrative data sources before releasing information as Official statistics, and before the exact timing and format of statistics can be confirmed. .</p><p> </p><p><strong> </strong></p> more like this

star this property answer text <p /> <p /> <p>The Performance of Atos is measured across a range of service level agreements setting out the Department's expectation for service delivery.</p><p>The Department has given Atos Healthcare a clearance target that we expect them to achieve by the end of the contract. We are closely monitoring their performance and currently Atos Healthcare are consistently achieving our monthly clearance expectations.</p><p>We are working closely with Atos Healthcare to continually improve their performance and have put in place changes to better manage the flow of work between the Department, all designed to reduce waiting times for claimants. These measures are taking effect and the backlog of cases has continued to fall over the past few months.</p> more like this
