The Office of Rail and Roads (ORR) is the safety regulator of Britain’s railway and can take enforcement action if these standards are not met.</p><p> </p><p>There are clear safety and accessibility benefits of installing platform edge tactiles. Whenever the industry installs, replaces or renews platform infrastructure they must install appropriate tactile surfaces. Works are scheduled to take place when demand is lowest to minimise disruption for passengers; historically this has been at weekends, Bank Holidays and at Easter and Christmas. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 16/03/2021 answer text <p>The Manchester Recovery Task Force, a cross-industry group comprising both the train operators and Network Rail, is consulting on its proposals aimed at solving, in the short-term, the performance problems of Manchester’s complex railway network by amending the timetable structure.</p><p> </p><p>The Task Force is made up of industry experts and appraises the work and provides direction in preparation for a decision by the Rail North Partnership following public consultation. Among the members of this taskforce is a representative from Transport for Greater Manchester who, alongside other members including Transport for the North, has contributed their local expertise to the development of the options. This work has also been supported by rail officers from across the north.</p><p> </p><p>The merits of each of the options are continuing to be assessed and will be considered alongside the responses to the consultation before any decisions are made. Current plans would see North Wales passengers benefiting from an HS2 interchange at Crewe, with shorter journey times than those currently possible on the West Coast Main Line to Holyhead.</p><p>In addition, we are progressing the development of a line speed enhancement scheme for the North Wales Coast Line, and the Prime Minister has asked Sir Peter Hendy CBE to undertake an independent review into transport connections across Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England. The aviation sector is vital for the whole of the UK economy in terms of connectivity, direct economic activity, trade, investment and jobs, particularly where viable alternative modes of travel are limited. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 11/03/2021 answer text <p>In the last three years, we have completed almost 700 single track miles of rail electrification in England and Wales, and we will continue to electrify more of the rail network in the years ahead. We are also supporting the development of new low-carbon technologies in rail, like battery and hydrogen trains, through innovation funding and research.</p><p> </p><p>The Network Rail-led Traction Decarbonisation Network Strategy (TDNS) provides advice about which decarbonising technologies (electrification, hydrogen, or battery) could best suit each part of the network. TDNS will inform the Department’s forthcoming Transport Decarbonisation Plan and Government decisions about the scale and pace of rail decarbonisation between now and 2050.</p><p> </p><p>Emissions from diesel trains can contribute to air pollution hotspots, with stations being an area of particular concern. The Government is funding a new £4.5 million air quality monitoring network, which will measure air pollution in up to 100 stations across the GB railway. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 11/03/2021 answer text <p>The Prime Minister’s 2020 Cycling and Walking Plan ‘Gear Change’ sets a new vision that cycling and walking will be the natural first choice for many journeys with half of all journeys in towns and cities being cycled or walked by 2030. This vision is complementary to the 2040 ambition contained in the 2017 Statutory Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy, that cycling and walking should be the natural choices for shorter journeys, or as part of a longer journey.</p><p> </p><p>The second Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy (CWIS 2) will be published after the Government has agreed and set out its long-term spending plans for active travel at the next multi-year Spending Review.
