This is not dependent on fixed term-limits for governing and elected officials, but we do support the establishment of proper democratic processes. UK aid is currently channelled through multilateral organisations, international Non-Governmental Organisations and commercial partners, which are monitored by DFID in Sudan. During the 39 month transitional period the UK will continue to provide lifesaving aid to the most vulnerable and urge the Civilian-led Government of Sudan to undertake much needed economic and political reforms to support prosperity and the rights of the people of Sudan. DFID is funding TradeMark East Africa to improve efficiency and capacity on the Uganda-South Sudan border at Nimule, and to work with the UN to speed up the importation on humanitarian goods.</p><p>The World Food Programme (WFP) is also working, with DFID funding, to strengthen cooperation on land border crossings between Sudan and South Sudan. We are constantly monitoring the effectiveness of the fund’s eligibility criteria and are pleased with progress to date. While US economic sanctions were lifted in late 2017, Sudan remains a challenging place to do business. The economic situation has been exacerbated by a shortage of foreign exchange which has resulted in fuel shortages. Sudan is still unable to access international financial assistance, in part due to its arrears to the International Monetary Fund and others and the failure to service its debt. Politically, the UK continues to work with the Government of Sudan to ensure that constitutional and political rights are respected. Sudan remains a Human Rights Priority Country for the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. This includes Annual Reviews which contain analysis of value for money and to what extent programmes’ anticipated results are being achieved. Annual Reviews of the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) are publically available on the Dev Tracker website. In addition the UK has been pushing a reform agenda of GPE’s operational processes, which has seen the Partnership make significant progress in areas such as results reporting and risk management. Alice Albright, CEO of GPE, acknowledged DFID’s pivotal role in improving GPE’s operations in evidence to the <a href="https://publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm201719/cmselect/cmintdev/367/36710.htm" target="_blank">IDC</a>.</p><p> </p><p>The UK is strongly committed to girls education, as one of our four pillars in the Strategic Vision for Women and Girls. We support gender equitable education through our bilateral and central education programmes; our education research; and our international relationships with partners such as UNICEF and UNGEI.
