answer text
DFID continues to provide funding to Enterprise St Helena (ESH), the island’s economic development agency, to promote and assist further investment in accommodation and other tourism services. The St Helena Government is confident that once weekly flights begin there will be sufficient accommodation for the anticipated number of visitors. Also that once a regular commercial air service between St Helena and the mainland is established, there will be further private sector investment in this regard.
more like this

answer text
DFID does not generally invest directly in hospitals, although we do support investment in strengthening health systems in developing countries. We recognise the benefits of using well designed natural ventilation where appropriate, including to reduce energy costs and prevent the spread of infection, as set out in World Health Organisation guidance on standards of infection control in health facilities. This provides advice on natural ventilation for infection control, allowing the creation of affordable and sustainable healthcare facilities that are safe for patients and healthcare workers.
more like this

question text Her Majesty's Government what action the Department for International Development (DfID) is taking to promote Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which promulgates freedom of religion and belief; how that action relates to (1) Sustainable Development Goal 16, and (2) DfID’s UK aid strategy objectives, and to the allocation of resources; and what steps they are taking to ensure that DfID's partners and projects do not discriminate on religious grounds. more like this

answer text
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) leads the government’s work to promote and protect the right to freedom of religion or belief internationally. DFID works closely with FCO, helping to raise concerns about discriminatory legislation and practices with governments, and funding targeted project work. We are clear that promoting freedom of religion or belief is an important contributor to achieving the UK Aid Strategy’s goals and is directly relevant to Sustainable Development Goal 16 on building peaceful and inclusive societies with access to justice for all and effective, accountable and inclusive institutions. DFID’s Partnership Principles include consideration of freedom of religion or belief alongside other human rights.
more like this

answer text
The Government condemns both the persistent widespread human rights abuses of the North Korean regime and the consistent attempts of that regime to develop nuclear weapons in defiance of international law. No UK money goes directly to the regime in North Korea, and there is no DFID bilateral aid programme. A number of multilateral agencies that work in North Korea receive funding via the UK’s core contributions to these organisations. The FCO scaled back project work after the fourth nuclear test – but continues to fund some small-scale projects aimed at improving the lives of the most vulnerable in DPRK society. This will be kept under review.
more like this

This enables us to have greater impact on HIV than we could achieve through bilateral programmes alone. They can deliver the large-scale, low-cost programmes needed in the most effective way and at the best value to the taxpayer. For example, our £1.1billion investment in the Global Fund (2017-19), up from our £1bn pledge in 2014-2016, makes us the second largest donor. This support will help provide lifesaving anti-retroviral therapy for 1.3 million people living with HIV.
