This situation is now being compounded by the rapid spread of COVID-19, with UK-funded modelling estimating that Yemen has already had over 1 million infections.</p><p>In response, we are promptly disbursing funding from our new £160 million commitment for this financial year (2020/21), to help the UN tackle the spread of COVID-19 in Yemen and address the humanitarian crisis. We have already disbursed 32% of this funding and expect to have disbursed over 50% by the end of July.</p><p>We are encouraging other international donors to urgently provide funding to the UN humanitarian response, ahead of Yemen’s expected COVID-19 peak in late July. We remain committed to supporting the UN to deliver vital humanitarian assistance across Yemen in order to alleviate suffering and meet the needs of millions of vulnerable Yemenis.</p><p>Ministers and officials continue to engage closely with other donors and the UN to ensure a coordinated international approach to the current excessive restrictions on humanitarian access, particularly in Houthi held areas. More than 20 million people in Yemen do not have reliable access to food and almost 10 million people face extreme food shortages.</p><p>We are concerned that the outbreak of COVID-19 in Yemen is already exacerbating this devastating humanitarian situation.</p><p>DFID modelling estimates that over 100,000 Yemenis are now likely to have been infected by COVID-19. With only half of Yemen’s health facilities currently functional, we are extremely concerned by the capacity of the Yemen’s healthcare system to respond.</p><p>Ultimately, a political settlement is the only way to properly address the worsening humanitarian crisis. Over the past three months, the average total commercial and humanitarian imports into Yemen met 90% of the country’s food needs and almost 80% of fuel needs.</p><p> </p><p>We are acutely aware of the restrictions humanitarian actors face delivering aid across Yemen, particularly in Houthi-controlled areas. As always, however, it has had a disproportionate impact on women and girls. The incidence of violence against women is rising rapidly, including: sexual violence; domestic violence; forced early marriages; denial of resources; and psychological and emotional abuse. Furthermore, the UN estimates that more than 1 million pregnant women or nursing mothers are acutely malnourished.</p><p>Our support to UNHCR provides cash assistance for vulnerable displaced women and female headed households to access protection services, including support for women and girls to prevent and respond to sexual violence, legal assistance and counselling. The UK’s funding to UNICEF provides nutritional support to pregnant women and nursing mothers.
