We frequently raise our serious concerns about the situation in Xinjiang with the Chinese authorities and at the UN, and will continue to do so. Egypt has a right to secure borders, and we continue urging Egypt to show maximum flexibility in opening the Rafah crossing. Officials from our Embassy in Cairo raised the Rafah crossing with the Egyptian authorities on 19 December 2019, highlighting the need to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza. While most EU Syria sanctions are on individuals associated with the Assad regime, the sanctions include restrictions on trade to or for the benefit of the Syrian regime in certain sectors, including (a) goods and technology related to chemical and biological weapons; (b) goods and technology that may be used to repress the civilian population of Syria; (c) interception and monitoring services; (d) military goods and technology; and (e) crude oil and petroleum products from Syria.The UK continues to work closely with European partners to sanction those profiting from the devastating Syrian war while minimising the impact of sanctions on ordinary Syrians. Regulations transitioning a number of EU sanctions regimes have already been made since the Act gained Royal Assent in May 2018. We continue to urge de-escalation.</p><p>We have consistently stated our support for the sovereign right of the Republic of Cyprus to exploit the oil and gas in its internationally agreed Exclusive Economic Zone. We also continue to attach the utmost importance to securing a long-term settlement to the division of Cyprus and believe the most enduring way of resolving difficult issues such as this is to achieve a Cyprus settlement. We encourage all parties to redouble their efforts in pursuit of this.</p><p>We believe it is critical for stability in the Mediterranean and for the integrity of the rules-based international system that disputes such as this are resolved, not through force, militarisation or coercion, but through dialogue and in accordance with international law. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 04/03/2020 answer text <p>The UK assesses that the effective prosecution of Daesh fighters in Iraq presents a significant challenge to Iraq's judicial systems, including in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. We are working directly with the judicial systems of the Government of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRI) to build their capacity, as called upon by UN Security Council Resolution 2379 on Daesh Accountability. We have identified areas where we can share expertise and will continue to work closely with Iraq's judiciary to ensure due process and compliance with international law.</p><p>Our Embassy in Baghdad has regular discussions with the Government of Iraq and the UN Investigative Team for the Accountability of Daesh (UNITAD), encouraging close co-operation between them to achieve justice for the victims of Daesh's crimes. Through advanced witness protection and support UNITAD is expanding its engagement with witnesses and survivors. We are committed to ensuring that those responsible for war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity are brought to justice in accordance with due legal process. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 05/03/2020 answer text <p>The UK welcomes the news that Sudan intends that Omar al-Bashir, and four others indicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC), will stand trial for crimes committed in Darfur. Accountability for Bashir and others is a significant step in Sudan's progress towards the goals of the revolution and a peace settlement in Darfur. We welcome this signal of the commitment of Sudan's transitional government to justice. The Sudanese authorities have not yet set out how they will cooperate with the ICC on arrest warrants, but have stated their intention for those indicted by the ICC to be tried for the crimes for which they have been charged. The modality of any trial, as well as the issuing of any further warrants of arrest or summons to appear, will also need to be agreed.
