answer text
The UK has long been a strong supporter of enlargement of the EU as a driver of peace, prosperity and reform across our continent.

This Government remains a strong supporter of enlargement, including to Turkey, provided that candidate countries only join the EU when they have met in full all the conditions and standards for doing so. At the same time, we recognise that many across Europe have been concerned by the large-scale movement of people that has followed the accession of new countries to the EU and this issue needs to be addressed before any more members join. That is why HMG is pursuing the reform of transitional arrangements on freedom of movement from future new Member States and is determined to see these reforms put in place before any further members are admitted to the EU.

more like this

answer text During my visit to the Republic of Cyprus in November, I discussed a wide range of issues with the Government, including the situation of those living in the north of the island. I did so within the context of UK support to the UN-led negotiations aimed at achieving a lasting settlement, which we believe would greatly improve the prospects for all Cypriots. We recognise that the political situation has raised human rights challenges for both Turkish Cypriots, Greek Cypriots and for religious minorities on the island. At Cyprus’ Universal Periodic Review at the UN Human Rights Council, the UK suggested that measures should be taken to enable the Turkish Cypriots to participate effectively in cultural, social and economic life and public affairs. more like this

answer text
The UK remains a strong supporter of Turkey’s EU accession process. Turkish accession would benefit the UK and the EU and contribute to our shared prosperity and security. The accession process recognises that Turkey needs to do more to meet EU standards through continuing reforms. Active and credible accession negotiations remain the best way for Turkey to make further progress, particularly in the areas of fundamental rights and rule of law. We and our EU partners will continue to support Turkey with their ongoing reform agenda.
more like this

answer text
We are deeply concerned by the detention of Ghoncheh Ghavami as well as other dual British/Iranian nationals detained in Iran. We have repeatedly pressed the Iranian Government over her welfare and our concerns about due process in her case. Both the Prime Minister and the Foreign Secretary discussed the matter with President Rouhani and Foreign Minister Zarif respectively in September. The UK’s non resident Chargé d’Affaires has raised Ms Ghavami’s case regularly with his Iranian counterpart, including most recently on 14 November. The FCO is providing consular assistance to Ms Ghavami’s family at this difficult time.
more like this

answer text We continue to work closely with the Nigerian authorities and our other partners in the search for the abducted Chibok girls. On 3 September, my Hon Friend, the Member for Southend and Rochford East (James Duddridge MP), the Minister for Africa, led the UK delegation to the Abuja ministerial meeting on security in Nigeria. At this meeting, he emphasised the importance of regional coordination between Nigeria and its neighbours in defeating Boko Haram and locating the girls. The Prime Minister has stressed to President Jonathan our continued commitment to helping the Nigerian Government find the girls. It is not yet clear what impact the recently announced ceasefire between the Nigerian security forces and Boko Haram might have on the missing Chibok girls. We are monitoring events closely. more like this
