answer text
The Friends of Yemen group was established in 2010, with the UK, Saudi Arabia and Yemen as permanent co-chairs. The group reconvened in 2012, following the Arab Spring, to focus on providing political support to Yemen’s transition under the GCC Initiative and support for economic and security reform. The Friends of Yemen group last met in the margins of the UN General Assembly in September 2014. The UK remains committed to the objectives of the group, and the important co-ordination mechanism it offers. We will continue to encourage all parties to engage with UN-led political talks and do all that we can to improve the humanitarian situation.
more like this

answer text
We remain in close contact with the Government of Yemen and other international partners regarding the situation in Yemen. I spoke to President Hadi of Yemen on 3 June and UN Special Envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed on 6 June ahead of consultations in Geneva on 16-18 June. The Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my right hon. Friend the Member for Runnymede and Weybridge (Mr Hammond), spoke to Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Al Jubeir on 23 June to discuss the humanitarian situation. Our Yemen Office in Jeddah and British Embassy in Riyadh are in regular contact with Yemeni and Saudi interlocutors to discuss the political and humanitarian situation and how the UK can best support moving towards a durable process for stability in the country. We remain fully supportive of the UN’s efforts to broker negotiations between Yemeni parties and call on parties to engage in good faith in this process.

The situation on the ground remains unstable and the humanitarian situation is dire. The Houthis and forces loyal to former President Saleh have continued their aggression, including most recently firing a scud missile across the Saudi border on 29 June.

answer text Both the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my right hon. Friend the Member for Runnymede and Weybridge (Mr Hammond), and I have kept in close contact with EU partners as we developed a comprehensive response to people smuggling across the Mediterranean. On 22 June the Foreign Secretary attended the Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg, where EU members agreed to launch a military operation to disrupt the business model of the smugglers. This will be conducted in a phased approach starting with surveillance and intelligence work. We will continue to work closely with EU and other partners, including the Libyan authorities, to stop people trafficking, develop a comprehensive solution to this crisis and to support a political process in Libya. more like this

answer text
The Government attaches great importance to the support of human rights around the world, in Mexico, as elsewhere. We share longstanding and serious concerns with the international community about reports of human rights violations and impunity in Mexico. We encourage efforts by the Mexican government to strengthen processes and mechanisms to prevent human rights violations and ensure that those responsible for violations are brought to justice. Indeed, the Prime Minister, my right hon. Friend the Member for Witney (Mr Cameron), discussed human rights with President Peña Nieto during his State Visit to the UK in March this year. Through a programme of visits, meetings and discussions with representatives of the Mexican government, human rights defenders, non-governmental organisations and international partners, we hope these efforts will build respect for fundamental human rights and strengthen rule of law in Mexico. We continue to support human rights organisations on the ground and share UK experience of tackling the challenges Mexico faces. We are currently focusing on the treatment of torture and enforced disappearance by judges, and are in the process of selecting projects to address security and justice concerns which will complement this work.

We continue to believe that an inclusive political process is the best way to achieve long-term stability, avoid civil war, economic collapse and a humanitarian catastrophe in Yemen. We work through the UN, Friends of Yemen and other international organisations to support the political transition. The UK contributes core funding to the Office of Jamal Benomar, the UN Special Advisor to the Secretary General, who is leading the political negotiations.
