answer text
I refer my honourable friend to the statement I made to the House on 8 April 2014, Offical Report, column 101. We are gravely concerned about the situation in Crimea and in the east of Ukraine where armed groups have seized government buildings in Donetsk, Kharkiv and Lugansk. There can be no justification for this action, which bears all the hallmarks of a Russian strategy to destabilise Ukraine. Russia should be clear that the deliberate escalation of this crisis will bring serious political and economic consequences.
more like this

answer text
During the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my right hon. Friend the Member for Richmond's (Yorks) (Mr Hague) meeting with Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy on 2 April, he discussed the political situation in Egypt, including the Presidential elections scheduled for 26-27 May. The Foreign Secretary raised his strong concern over the death sentence imposed on 529 people on 24 March and the case of two British journalists who have been charged in Egypt and are currently being tried in absentia. He asked the Egyptian Government to review these issues as a matter of urgency and to ensure that the individuals' human and legal rights are properly upheld.

The Foreign Secretary condemned the terrorist attacks of 2 April in Cairo and sent his condolences to the family of the victim and those who had been injured. He reiterated the importance of cooperation against the shared threat from terrorism. He also raised the UK's concerns regarding the security situation in the South Sinai region. He urged the Egyptian Government to do all it could to protect British nationals in Egypt, including those visiting the Red Sea resorts over the holiday season, and to take further measures against the risk of terrorism.

The two ministers also discussed recent events in the Middle East, including the crisis in Syria and the importance of progress on the Middle East Peace Process.

There has been no date set for their next meeting.

question text To ask Her Majesty's Government whether any countries have outstanding applications for membership of the European Union and which they are; how many countries having applied are pending recognition that they have reached the level of compliance required under Article 2 of the Treaty on European Union; and whether any precedence will be given to applicants based on the date when they are recognised as having reached the compliance criteria. more like this

answer text
Five countries currently have the status of a ‘candidate' for membership of the EU. Of these, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey are currently in accession negotiations. Iceland has suspended its accession negotiations. Macedonia is a candidate country but has not yet opened accession negotiations. Negotiations are opened on the basis that countries have achieved a high degree of compliance with the membership criteria, including respect for the values referred to in Article 2 Treaty on EU (TEU).

Albania has also submitted an application for EU membership. It did this in 2009. The Council is considering Albania's application in light of assessments prepared by the Commission.

Each aspiring country's progress towards the European Union depends on its individual efforts to comply fully with the Copenhagen criteria for accession and broader enlargement conditionality. No precedence is given to applicants based on the date they have been recognised as having reached the criteria for opening accession negotiations.

The UK continues to be a strong supporter of enlargement based on firm-but-fair conditionality. Countries should proceed strictly on merit, with full adherence to the necessary conditionality before accession.
