answer text
We continue to be deeply concerned by the reports of human rights violations, abuses and related crimes. The UK believes that the East African Community (EAC) inter-Burundian dialogue led by the region is key to ensuring open and inclusive elections in 2020 and to putting an end to the ongoing political and human rights situation.

We continue to encourage EAC member states to engage in this dialogue and to work with the Government of Burundi to resolve the political situation. The UK Special Envoy to the Great Lakes Region recently met with the EAC counterparts facilitating the dialogue to discuss next steps. At the UN Security Council on 21 November 2018, we again highlighted our concerns at the situation in Burundi and the importance of the regionally led dialogue.
more like this

answer text
At this highly sensitive time in the region, there is an urgent need to restart the peace process between Israelis and Palestinians. We regularly press both parties to resume direct negotiations towards a two-state solution. I discussed the issue of the Middle East Peace Process with the Israeli Ambassador to the UK on 11 October and the Palestinian Foreign Minister on 24 November. We continue to believe the best way to achieve this is through substantive peace talks between the parties leading to a two-state solution based on well-known parameters. These parameters are 1967 borders with agreed land swaps, Jerusalem as the shared capital of both states, and a just, fair, agreed and realistic settlement for refugees.
more like this

While levels of violence have reduced since the signing of the peace agreement on 12 September, progress on implementation is slow and inconsistent, violations of the ceasefire continue in some areas, and levels of crime remain high. Through diplomatic engagement by Ministers and senior officials, we continue to urge the parties to demonstrate their commitment to providing safety and security for the South Sudanese people across the country by putting an immediate end to all violence.
more like this

Our Embassy in Tel Aviv and Consulate General in Jerusalem raise issues of religious freedom with the Israeli and Palestinian governments and are in contact with representatives of churches on a range of issues. We continue to encourage Israel, the Palestinian Authority and Jordan as custodian of the holy sites in Jerusalem to do all they can to work together to uphold the status quo at all the holy sites in Jerusalem. They, along with a number of official international observers, assessed the elections to be broadly free, fair and orderly. However, in line with the African Union's own election monitoring report, we note that the participation of political parties was prohibited and we recommend that Eswatini lift this restriction for future elections, so as to enable a more open and democratic system for its voters.
more like this
