The UK Government continues to work with the US to scope options to bring forward the refurbishment, but due to the remote nature of Ascension Island options are limited by logistical constraints.
more like this

NGO activities are co-ordinated by the official Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Italy, and all NGOs should operate in accordance with international law. It is the organised criminal networks who are exploiting vulnerable migrants and profiting from these dangerous journeys across the sea. That is why our priority is to tackle these smugglers.
more like this

answer text
We follow the situation in Papua with close interest, whilst respecting the territorial integrity of Indonesia. We recognise there are significant challenges in Papua and are concerned about the sporadic violence and restrictions on freedom of expression which continue to take place, such as the events in Nabire District between 29 June and 6 July. As a result, we have pressed the Indonesian authorities to address legitimate concerns and ensure the sustainable and equitable development of the province. Our Ambassador and Embassy officials visit Papua periodically. Officials most recently visited earlier this month and our Ambassador will visit again later this year. We will continue to raise our concerns with the Indonesian authorities. We also raised the issue of access to Papua for foreign journalists during Indonesia's Universal Periodic Review at the Human Rights Council in May 2017.

We welcome the Indonesian Government's commitment to improving the situation in Papua. President Widodo has visited a number of times since his election in 2014 and has granted clemency to some prisoners and lifted travel restrictions for foreign journalists and international organisations. These are welcome developments, which we support.

I also remain deeply concerned at the detention of Taner Kilic, Amnesty International's Turkey Chair. As I set out in my recent statement on these arrests, both the Foreign Secretary and the Prime Minister have raised these arrests in recent discussions with Turkish counterparts as have I with the Turkish Ambassador. We continue to urge the Turkish authorities to uphold international standards with regard to the rule of law, including the presumption of innocence, and to protect fundamental rights including freedom of expression and assembly.
more like this

answer text
The Government is fully committed to creating a Blue Belt around the UK Overseas Territories (OTs). We remain on track to deliver four million km2 of protected ocean around our OTs by 2020. In support of our commitment, I was pleased to announce £20 million of funding to support our Blue Belt commitments over the next four years at the Our Oceans Summit in Washington DC last September.

So far, that funding has provided support to develop management, surveillance and enforcement plans to very large marine protected areas already announced. It has also supported the development of marine protection strategies to Territories committed to developing marine protection regimes by 2020. Specific funding arrangements for future years are under discussion.
more like this

We take any such reports very seriously.

We remain concerned about the limited democratic space in Rwanda. The number of opposition candidates standing in the Presidential elections on 4 August is an example of these limitations.

Although we support the Government of Rwanda's Vision 2020 development programme, that programme clearly sets out their commitment to "the rule of law and the protection of human rights".
