There remains an urgent need for all the parties to reach an agreement that addresses the underlying causes of the conflict in Gaza. This should ensure that Hamas and other militant groups permanently end rocket fire and other attacks against Israel and that Israel lifts its restrictions to allow the Gazan economy to grow. We welcome the recent positive steps that Israel has taken to ease some restrictions. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 02/06/2015 answer text <p>We are concerned about the closure of the Rafah Pedestrian Crossing and the impact that has, particularly on urgent medical and other priority cases in Gaza. The crossing has been mostly closed since the start of the year while the Egyptian government construct a buffer zone, though we understand the crossing has been opened in recent days for entry into Gaza.</p><p>We have encouraged the Egyptian authorities to ease the movement of bona fide travellers through Rafah, and in the longer term to consider expanding Rafah to passenger transit and humanitarian goods transit, which will help to ease humanitarian pressures. The Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my right hon. Friend the Member for Runnymede and Weybridge (Mr Hammond), raised the importance of reopening the Rafah crossing when he spoke with the Egyptian Foreign Minister on 14 January. Friend the Member for Runnymede and Weybridge (Mr Hammond) visited Iraq from 25 to 26 April, when he met Prime Minister Abadi, President Massoum and other members of the Government of Iraq (GoI). During his visit he discussed the situation in the region, the importance of political reform and reconciliation, the military campaign against Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), and the need for a comprehensive stabilisation plan for areas liberated from ISIL.</p><p>Through our Embassy in Baghdad and Consulate General in Erbil we remain in regular contact with the GoI, and continue to support PM Abadi and his efforts to ensure a unified response to the current situation.</p><p>As part of the Global Coalition to Counter-ISIL, we are working with the GoI to defeat ISIL in both Iraq and Syria.</p> answering member constituency Bournemouth East answering member printed Mr Tobias Ellwood question first answered 01/06/2015 10:45:57 answering member 1487 label Biography information for Mr Tobias Ellwood

In our communications with the GoI we have emphasised the need to do everything possible to prevent civilian casualties. We have also been clear that the military campaign must be supported by meaningful political reconciliation. We therefore welcome Prime Minister Abadi’s ongoing commitment to inclusive governance and ensuring a unified political response to the current situation.<br> <br>The situation in Syria continues to deteriorate. Assad continues to defy the international community through his barbaric actions, including the targeting of civilians by using artillery and barrel bombs, some containing chlorine. A political transition as set out in the Geneva communiqué is more vital than ever. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 01/06/2015 answer text <p>The UK remains in close contact with the Government of Yemen and other international partners regarding the situation in Yemen. I spoke to President Hadi of Yemen on 25 May 2015, with the UN Special Envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed on 26 May, and with the Saudi Under Secretary of Foreign Affairs for Bilateral Relations Dr Prince Turki on 24 May. We discussed the situation on the ground and I emphasised the importance of moving to a durable political process.</p><p>The situation on the ground remains unstable and humanitarian needs are critical. The Houthis have continued to use violence and intimidation to achieve their aims. Following the end of a five-day humanitarian pause, Saudi-led airstrikes resumed on 17 May.
