answer text The UK has consistently raised the issue of the forcible recruitment of child soldiers in South Sudan in United Nationas (UN) fora, most recently, as part of the UN Security Council Working Group on Children in Armed Conflict. In addition, the report of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict is due to be discussed at the Human Rights Council this month. This will present a further opportunity to highlight the need for the Government of South Sudan to recommit to its action plan to end and prevent the recruitment of child soldiers, as they underlined during the roundtable on Children and Armed Conflict that I hosted at the UN General Assembly in September 2014. more like this

answer text South Sudan is a Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative (PSVI) priority country and we remain deeply concerned at the prevalence of sexual violence in the ongoing conflict. The UK is currently funding a project that is creating women's protection teams in local communities and the Department for International Development (DFID) is preparing to start a new Access to Justice Programme that will support victims of sexual violence and promote greater accountability. We also continue to press the government to meet the commitments made in the October 2014 joint communiqué between President Kiir and the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Zainab Bangura. more like this

answer text
The UK is currently not providing direct bilateral support to the South Sudan National Police Service (SSNPS). However, we do maintain political and strategic dialogue with their leadership, focused on accountability, human rights and preventing sexual violence.

We also support targeted multilateral interventions through UN Development Programme (UNDP), the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and civil society. This includes support for Special Protection Units for survivors of Sexual and Gender-based Violence (SGBV) and other vulnerable groups, support to national partners to develop an Accountability Mechanism for the SSNPS as recommended in the May 2014 UNMISS Human Rights Report, and the placement of four UK Police Officers in UNMISS to support community policing efforts. These interventions have been cleared, as appropriate, through an Overseas Security and Justice Assessment and the UN Human Rights Due Diligence Policy Task Force.
more like this

answer text We remain deeply concerned by the situation in South Sudan. Nearly 2 million people have been displaced and thousands killed. We welcome the Inter Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) agreement of 1 February between the parties to the conflict but this needs to be implemented and a transitional government formed. Throughout the peace negotiations we have been clear that any transitional government must listen to the diverse range of voices that exist within South Sudan including the important role that religious leaders can have in the reconciliation process. more like this
