We also continue to meet regularly at senior level with both the Chinese authorities and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government to discuss the situation. I met Hong Kong Justice Secretary Rimsky Yuen on 14 October. <br><br>We have consistently called on all sides to ensure that the demonstrations are peaceful and in accordance with the law, including in my response to a Westminister Hall Debate on 22 October, in my Written Ministerial Statement of 13 October, and in a Foreign and Commonwealth Office statement on 2 October on the question of constitutional reform. We continue to meet regularly at senior levels with both the Chinese authorities and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government.</p><p>Earlier this month, the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my right hon. Friend the Member for Runnymede and Weybridge (Mr Hammond), met the Chinese Ambassador to discuss developments in Hong Kong and to set out the UK position. The Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my hon. Friend the Member for East Devon (Mr Swire), also met the Hong Kong government’s Secretary of Justice to discuss the importance of the introduction of universal suffrage. The Prime Minister, my right hon. The Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my right hon. Friend the Member for Runnymede and Weybridge (Mr Hammond) has met the Chinese Ambassador and I have met the Hong Kong Government’s Secretary of Justice. We have set out our concerns about events in Hong Kong. We have made clear our view that Hong Kong’s future is best served by a transition to universal suffrage, in line with the Basic Law, which meets the aspirations of the people of Hong Kong, and which offers them a genuine choice in the election of the Chief Executive.</p><p>We continue to call on all sides to ensure that the demonstrations remain peaceful. We also encourage all parties to engage in dialogue and to work towards a consensus that allows a significant step forward for democracy. We recognise that the detailed terms that the National People’s Congress (NPC) has set for the 2017 election, will disappoint those who are arguing for a more open nomination process. The UK’s position on constitutional reform has always been that the detail of the constitutional package is for the Governments of Hong Kong and China and the people of Hong Kong to decide in line with the Basic Law. On 6 October, the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my right hon. Friend the Member for Runnymede and Weybridge (Mr Hammond) discussed these issues with the Chinese Ambassador. The Prime Minister, my right hon. Friend the Member for Witney (Mr Cameron) and the Foreign Secretary, also discussed Hong Kong in recent meetings with Chinese Vice Premier Ma Kai.</p><p>Foreign and Commonwealth Office officials have regular contacts on this issue with representatives from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) Government and Chinese Central People’s Government. During these discussions, the Government has consistently expressed the view that Hong Kong’s future is best served by a transition to universal suffrage, in line with the Basic Law, which meets the aspirations of the people of Hong Kong and offers them a genuine choice.
