answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 01/12/2014 answer text <p>The British Ambassador to Bahrain has publicly raised the UK’s concern about the death of Hasan al-Shaikh at Bahrain’s Reformation and Rehabilitation Centre. A Special Investigation Unit report led to six members of staff, including three high ranking officers, appearing before the High Criminal Court on 25 November to answer charges of assaulting and torturing four men, including Al Shaikh. All six defendents pleaded not guilty and the case was adjourned until 22 December. Her next court hearing will be on 9 December for charges under Bahrain’s &quot;lese majeste&quot; law. The British Ambassador to Bahrain has raised the case at a senior level with the Government of Bahrain and emphasised the importance of ensuring that due legal process is respected and international norms of justice adhered to. I understand that all of them have now been released, but investigations into 12 individuals continue. The British Embassy in Bahrain will continue to monitor these cases.</p><p>The UK Government stands firmly against torture and cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment or punishment. The Embassy of the United States in Manama continues to offer consular services to Mr. Al-Maidan. The UK is providing a package of technical assistance to support progress in line with the recommendations of the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry and UN Universal Periodic Review. These include the establishment of the Ministry of Interior’s Ombudsman’s Office to receive complaints and to oversee and conduct investigations, the establishment of a Prisoners’ and Detainees’ Rights Commission and reform of the National Institute of Human Rights. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 26/11/2014 answer text <p>The Foreign and Commonwealth Office actively encourages broad engagement and participation of all political societies and the people of Bahrain in the electoral process, in the spirit of shared responsibility and national reconciliation.</p><p>On 24 September, EU Member States’ Ambassadors’ present in Bahrain (UK, Italy, France and Germany) welcomed the announcement by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to hold legislative elections in Bahrain. The first round of parliamentary elections, which took place on 22 November, went smoothly despite some violence and IED attacks. Our engagement is constructive and focused on supporting political and human rights reform.
