We support the recommendation to address the management and rehabilitation of juveniles in the justice system, in the Prisoners’ and Detainees’ Rights Commission and the Ministry of Interior’s Ombudsman’s office reports earlier this year. We encourage the Government of Bahrain to implement these recommendations promptly and plan to provide UK support in the field of juvenile justice.
more like this

answer text
We are closely monitoring the case of Abdulhadi Al Khawaja. As in the case of his 110 day hunger strike in 2012, we are concerned about his welfare. Bahraini Ministry of Interior’s Ombudsman’s Office announced it was launching an investigation into the conditions of his detention. As a result, an investigator visited Mr Al Khawaja in Jau prison. We understand that Mr Al Khawaja has seen medical staff regularly since he began his hunger strike and that, according to the Ombudsman’s Office, the medical staff continue to provide him with health care and are monitoring his medical condition closely.
more like this

We publically expressed concern at the decision by the Cassation Court to uphold the life sentences of these individuals, not least because of the reports of mistreatment and lack of due legal process.
more like this

answer text

Bahrain is a country case study in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office's human rights report, and as such we continue to monitor the human rights situation there and issue a biannual update. Bahrain's designation as a country case study in the 2013 FCO Annual Report on Human Rights and Democracy Report strikes an appropriate balance between the undoubted progress made in some areas and our continuing concerns in others. We will review all countries with human rights issues in our preparation for the 2014 Annual Report, which will be published in early 2015. Bahrain is making substantial progress in respect of political reforms and will continue to receive our support.

more like this
