To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what representations his Department has made to the Government of Venezuela on (a) upholding Article 233 of the Venezuelan Constitution and (b) recognising the president of the National Assembly of Venezuela Juan Guaidó, as the acting president of that country; and if he will make a statement.

On 24 January in Washington the Foreign Secretary made clear that we no longer regard Mr Maduro as the legitimate leader of Venezuela, and Mr Guaido is the man to take Venezuela forward.I attended an emergency debate at the UN Security Council on 26 January and announced we would recognise Mr Guaido as the constitutional interim President if new elections were not called within 8 days (by 4 February).We have not spoken with the Venezuelan Government regarding upholding Article 233 of the Venezuelan Constitution, but have made it clear publicly that we expect the terms of the Constitution to be upheld.
