During the visit, I will see first-hand the impact of climate change on this unique environment. As the Minister with responsibility for the Polar Regions, the visit will also provide an opportunity to support and thank those who work in Antarctica for extended periods. Extremist settlers, by targeting and killing Palestinian civilians, are undermining security and stability when Israelis and Palestinians are desperate for both. We maintain a continuous dialogue with Israel on the humanitarian situation, including in relation to the displacement of Palestinian civilians. As the Prime Minister and the Foreign Secretary have both discussed with the Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, Israel must abide by International Humanitarian Law and take every effort to protect civilians. Ultimately, there must be a political solution: a two-state solution which provides justice and security for both Israelis and Palestinians. The Prime Minister and the Foreign Secretary have both met the Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and have stressed to him that Israel must protect all civilians as far as possible and abide by International Humanitarian Law; under International Humanitarian Law, journalists covering conflicts should be afforded protection. We continue to press both at the UN and directly with Israel for unhindered humanitarian access and substantive humanitarian pauses, to ensure the conditions are safe for humanitarian organisations to deliver aid to those in need and give respite to civilians.</p><p>The UK also supported the recent Media Freedom Coalition statement expressing concern over the repercussions for the safety of journalists and access to information caused by the serious escalation of hostilities between Israel and Hamas. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 27/12/2023 answer text <p>The reports of gender-based violence, including sexual violence, perpetrated by Hamas against Israeli women and girls and other civilians are horrifying. We unequivocally condemn gender-based violence in Israel and wherever it occurs in the world. Conflict-related sexual violence is an abuse of human rights and when perpetrated in the context of an armed conflict, can constitute a violation of international humanitarian law such as a war crime. We are regularly engaging with partners, including the UN, on this issue and call for these reports to be fully investigated to ensure justice for victims.</p><p>The UK is a global leader in preventing and responding to gender-based violence. Phase 1 of our pioneering What Works to Prevent Violence programme resulted in reductions in violence of around 50%, proving that violence is preventable. The UK is continuing our work to end gender-based violence in phase 2 of the What Works programme, in which we are investing £67.5 million. In addition, in November 2023, the UK announced £33 million of further funding to support our efforts in tackling gender-based violence.
