In particular, there are disturbing reports of use of live ammunition, intimidation and excessive force. There is no specific or separate religious dimension to them or to the Government of Sudan's response. The extent of UK funded defence engagement with the Government of Sudan is limited to the provision of a small scale education programme to the regular Sundanese armed forces that focuses on International Humanitarian Law, the Law of Armed Conflict and on Governance and Security Sector Reform. On 12 January the Government of Sudan reported that 24 deaths had occurred. Activist groups and Non-Governmental Organisations assess the number to be considerably higher. We are unable to verify these figures independently, but we continue to express our deep concern at the current situation, both bilaterally and as part of the Troika (with the USA and Norway). We are urging the Government of Sudan to respect the Sudanese people's right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, and to ensure those responsible for the deaths of protestors are held to account. We expect political activists, human rights defenders, journalists and others who are being detained without charge or trial to be released immediately, and for all detainees to be treated in accordance with international standards. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 20/05/2019 answer text <p>On 21 March the Annual Report of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights assessed progress made by the Sri Lankan government in the implementation of UN Human Rights Council resolution 30/1 and 34/1. We agree that progress has been made and welcome restoration of important democratic checks and balances, improvements in freedom of expression and assembly, the return of some military–held civilian land, the establishment of an Office of Missing Persons and the ratification of the Convention on Enforced Disappearances.</p><p>However, we want to see further and faster progress. In particular, we encourage the Government to establish the full range of transitional justice mechanisms envisaged in resolution 30/1, to deliver meaningful devolution through constitutional reform, replace the Prevention of Terrorism Act with human rights compliant legislation, and return all remaining military-held private land. We continue to urge the Government of Sri Lanka to deliver fully on the commitments it made in resolutions 30/1 and 34/1.</p><p>On 21 March, the UK introduced a new Resolution at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva rolling over these commitments, calling for the development of a comprehensive and time bound implementation strategy. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 03/12/2018 answer text <p>We welcome the 12 September Peace Agreement and have consistently supported peacebuilding though diplomatic engagement by our missions in Juba and the region, and by the UK Special Representative for Sudan and South Sudan. We have advocated the inclusion of civil society groups (including faith groups, women, and refugees) in the peace talks, and continue to encourage this in the implementation of the peace agreement. We are pressing all sides to show genuine commitment to implement the Peace Agreement in full, and working with the international community to ensure there are consequences for those who work against peace, through the enforcement of UN sanctions and the arms embargo.</p><p>To complement this the UK funds a number of activities to support peacebuilding such as work with the South Sudan Council of Churches National Action Plan for Peace, which supports peacebuilding, reconciliation, and mediation efforts at the local level, and between national level leaders.
