It is yet another reminder of the grave danger that North Korea poses. As a consequence on 5 July, the North Korean Ambassador was summoned to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The UN Security Council met to condemn the test. We will work with partners on further measures to address the threat to international peace and security posed by North Korea's destabilising and provocative conduct.
more like this

star this property answer text
We are deeply concerned by reports detailing human rights violations against Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine State of Burma. These include the reports by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, as well as the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Burma and by a range of international human rights organisations. We are also concerned by the humanitarian situation facing the people in Rakhine with up to 70,000 refugees fleeing across the border into Bangladesh.

With our International partners, we have co-sponsored a Resolution at the Human Rights Council in March 2017 which established a Fact Finding Mission to assess human rights violations in Rakhine. We urge the Burmese authorities to cooperate with the Mission as agreed by the Human Rights Council.

The UK continues to seek an end to all violations of international law, and to prevent escalation, irrespective of whether these violations fit the definition of specific international crimes. Human rights and democratic reform will remain at the heart of British policy. We are committed to being a vocal advocate for change in Burma and continue to press for action at every opportunity to resolve issues of real concern.

star this property answer text
The Government operates one of the most robust arms export control regimes in the world. All export licence applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis against the Consolidated EU & National Arms Export Licensing Criteria (the 'Consolidated Criteria'), taking account of all relevant factors at the time of the application.

The Consolidated Criteria were updated in March 2014 following the signing of the Arms Trade Treaty. Criterion 1(b) says that the Government will not grant a licence if to do so would be inconsistent with "the UK's obligations under the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty". Criterion 2(a) states that the Government will "not grant a licence if there is a clear risk that the items might be used for internal repression" and Criterion 2(c) states that the Government will "not grant a licence if there is a clear risk that the items might be used in the commission of a serious violation of international humanitarian law".

A licence will not be issued for any items, including those destined for an end user in Saudi Arabia, if to do so would be inconsistent with these Criteria. We welcome the Divisional Court's judgment of 10 July recognising the rigorous and robust processes we have in relation to decisions about exports to Saudi Arabia for possible use in the conflict in Yemen.
