Our plan for education is to raise standards at all schools so every child, including the most gifted, can achieve their full potential.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>It is a fundamental responsibility of every school in England to ensure that their most gifted pupils receive an education that engages and stretches them at school, as well as inspiring them to reach their full potential. Schools are best placed to know and respond to the individual needs of their pupils, including the most able.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The Government has freed schools from the constraints of excessive ring-fencing and bureaucracy. Schools leaders are free to decide how best to use their funding to provide extra support to talented children, including using the pupil premium to support gifted disadvantaged pupils. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 08/12/2014 answer text <p>Secure Children’s Homes provide specialist care in a secure environment for some of the most vulnerable young children in England to protect them, and others around them from harm, including girls at risk of child sexual exploitation.</p><p>In light of the growing demand for placements of children considered vulnerable, it is important that the system of provision sufficiently meets the changing needs of children that need to be placed in a secure setting.</p><p>The Department for Education is conducting a review of Secure Children’s Homes to examine the current and likely future need of places and what changes, improvements or new forms of provision may be required to ensure those needs are met. We have also announced steps to improve practice, such as better data collection on children who go missing.</p><p>Through the Innovation Programme we have also invited proposals for new ways of supporting vulnerable adolescents, including a number of bids that seek to prevent Child Sexual Exploitation.</p><p>The Department has recently consulted on changes to children’s homes regulations to introduce new Quality Standards. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 10/11/2014 answer text <p>The Department for Education recognises that meeting the incidental costs of state education can be a challenge for some low-income families. We already have a range of policies in place to help ensure that all children benefit from a good education, regardless of their background, and to support low-income families with the non-core costs of education.</p><p>The additional funding provided to schools through the pupil premium is helping schools to transform the way they educate disadvantaged children. Schools are made accountable for this additional funding, worth £2.5 billion this year and protected in real terms next year, through performance tables and Ofsted inspection. A recent Ofsted report showed that this policy is working, and schools are using the funding more effectively than ever before.</p><p>In addition, the Department has invested £340 million to support cultural education and announced an additional £18 million funding boost for music education, giving thousands more disadvantaged pupils access to instruments.</p><p>The Department issues very clear guidance to schools which seeks to minimise the impact of school uniform costs and emphasises the need for schools to consider the cost and availability of uniform when setting their policy. Individual local authorities and academies may choose to provide grants to help with the cost of school clothing in cases of financial hardship, and we would also encourage individual schools to consider running their own schemes.</p><p>The Department has also published advice on charging for school activities to support schools in fulfilling their statutory duties in relation to charging and remission for school activities and school visits. This guidance advises schools to make it clear to parents that there is no obligation to make any contribution. As ever, schools have the discretion to use their additional funds to help with the cost of visits and activities for pupils whose families cannot afford it.</p><p>Finally, from 1 September the Government has expanded free school meals to all children in reception, year 1 and year 2. As a result, up to 100,000 more poor children are benefiting from a healthy and nutritious meal every day, saving low-income families around £400 per year per child.</p><p>We know that education is the key to breaking the intergenerational cycle of poverty. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 27/10/2014 answer text <p>We remain committed to our goal of ending child poverty by 2020.</p><p>The ‘2014-17 Child Poverty Strategy’, published in June this year, outlines our plans to tackle the root causes of poverty, by:</p><ol><li>Raising the incomes of poor children’s families by helping them get into work and making work pay.</li><li>Supporting the living standards of low-income families.</li><li>Raising educational outcomes of poor children.</li></ol><p>Work remains the best route out of poverty. That is why the Government is introducing Universal Credit which will lift around 300,000 children out of poverty due to increased entitlements. This Government is also focused on breaking the cycle of poor children going on to become poor adults. The Department for Education is committed to reforming the current child protection system to make sure that children at risk of abuse or neglect are identified early, have an assessment which is based on their individual needs and are able to access services which promote their welfare and protect them from harm.</p><p>The Department is improving social worker training and developing further the skills of existing social workers so they can make the right decisions for children. Since 2010, we have invested more than £400million in bursaries and training programmes to attract the very best candidates into the profession.</p><p>We have also worked closely with Ofsted to introduce a new, tougher inspection framework for children’s services. From April 2015 this framework will be extended to identify weak interagency working between local authorities, the police and other local agencies. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 23/07/2014 answer text <p>Preventing extremism in all schools is a priority for the Government, and the Department for Education established a dedicated Due Diligence and Counter Extremism Division (previously known as the Preventing Extremism Unit) in October 2010 to oversee this work.</p><p> </p><p>The Division’s aim is to ensure that children and young people in England are safeguarded from extremists and extremist views in schools or in out of school hours learning, and prevent young people from becoming radicalised or acting on extreme views. The Division is staffed by civil servants with support from specialists with expertise in security matters.</p><p> </p><p>Schools can help protect children from extremist and violent views in the same ways that they help to safeguard children from drugs, gang violence or alcohol abuse. Schools’ work on the Government’s Prevent strategy needs to be seen in this context.
