answer text <p>I have asked Ofsted to respond using the data they hold on registered childcare places. HM Chief Inspector, Sir Michael Wilshaw, has written to the Rt. hon Lady, and a copy of his response has been placed in the House Libraries. Some providers such as schools with nursery provision for children aged 3 or over are exempt from registration. The number of places therefore may not include the full range of early years provision available in the area.</p><p> </p><p>In addition, the Department for Education's Childcare and Early Years Providers Survey collects data on all registered childcare places, including those in maintained schools and nurseries. These figures are therefore more comprehensive than the Ofsted figures; however data is only available at a national and regional level.</p><p> </p><p>The table below provides data for 2009, 2010 and 2011. This shows that in 2011 there were 141,800 early years places in schools in London. Data is not available for 2012. Data from the 2013 survey will be published in September 2014.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><table><tbody><tr><td colspan="7"><p><strong>Number of registered places in London and England</strong></p></td></tr><tr><td> </td><td colspan="2"><p>2009</p></td><td colspan="2"><p>2010[1]</p></td><td colspan="2"><p>2011</p></td></tr><tr><td> </td><td><p>England</p></td><td><p>London</p></td><td><p>England</p></td><td><p>London</p></td><td><p>England</p></td><td><p>London</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>Full day care</p></td><td><p>647,800</p></td><td><p>102,200</p></td><td><p>716,700</p></td><td><p>99,200</p></td><td><p>721,500</p></td><td><p>100,900</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>Sessional</p></td><td><p>227,900</p></td><td><p>25,100</p></td><td><p>251,000</p></td><td><p>35,600</p></td><td><p>251,000</p></td><td><p>38,400</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>After school clubs</p></td><td><p>272,500</p></td><td><p>47,400</p></td><td><p>368,100</p></td><td><p>58,800</p></td><td><p>357,400</p></td><td><p>54,100</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>Holiday clubs</p></td><td><p>260,400</p></td><td><p>38,800</p></td><td><p>349,400</p></td><td><p>61,000</p></td><td><p>339,300</p></td><td><p>49,400</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>Childminders</p></td><td><p>262,900</p></td><td><p>37,700</p></td><td><p>245,100</p></td><td><p>38,300</p></td><td><p>236,900</p></td><td><p>37,200</p></td></tr><tr><td><p><strong>Total childcare</strong></p></td><td><p><strong>1,671,500</strong></p></td><td><p><strong>251,100</strong></p></td><td><p><strong>1,930,300</strong></p></td><td><p><strong>292,800</strong></p></td><td><p><strong>1,906,100</strong></p></td><td><p><strong>280,100</strong></p></td></tr><tr><td><p>Nursery schools</p></td><td><p>29,600</p></td><td><p>4,700</p></td><td><p>25,300</p></td><td><p>5,100</p></td><td><p>25,900</p></td><td><p>5,600</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>Primary schools with nursery and reception classes</p></td><td><p>468,300</p></td><td><p>107,400</p></td><td><p>491,800</p></td><td><p>125,800</p></td><td><p>489,100</p></td><td><p>121,000</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>Primary schools with reception but no nursery classes</p></td><td><p>272,700</p></td><td><p>17,300</p></td><td><p>308,400</p></td><td><p>16,600</p></td><td><p>286,900</p></td><td><p>15,200</p></td></tr><tr><td><p><strong>Total early years</strong></p></td><td><p><strong>770,600</strong></p></td><td><p><strong>129,500</strong></p></td><td><p><strong>825,500</strong></p></td><td><p><strong>147,500</strong></p></td><td><p><strong>802,000</strong></p></td><td><p><strong>141,800</strong></p></td></tr><tr><td><p><strong>Total overall<strong>[2]</strong></strong></p></td><td><p><strong>2,442,100</strong></p></td><td><p><strong>380,600</strong></p></td><td><p><strong>2,755,800</strong></p></td><td><p><strong>440,300</strong></p></td><td><p><strong>2,708,100</strong></p></td><td><p><strong>421,900</strong></p></td></tr></tbody></table><p>Source: Childcare and Early Years Providers Survey</p><p> </p><p>[1] A new sampling approach was adopted in the 2010 survey due to changes in the way Ofsted classified childcare providers; this may have impacted on trends between 2010 and previous years.</p><p>[2] Totals may not equal the sum of the constituent parts due to rounding.</p><p> </p>
