answer text <p>Whilst many deaths and injuries are the result of a tragic accident, too many of these incidents involve criminal behaviour. Every avoidable death is one too many.</p><p>The government has committed to bring forward changes to ensure the courts have the powers they need to deal with those drivers who kill by dangerous driving or where they are over the limits for alcohol and drugs.</p><p>The Department want to close a loophole in the law that fails to recognise the harm caused where drivers cause serious injury by their careless driving.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The government response to the consultation on driving offences and penalties relating to causing death or serious injury was published on 16 October 2017.</p><p> </p><p>We will bring forward proposals for changes in the law as soon as parliamentary time allows. These proposals will take account of, and incorporate, all of government’s proposals for safer roads, including any arising from the Department of Transport’s review of cycle safety.</p> more like this

A consultation on maximum penalties for driving offences resulting in death or serious injury, issued by the previous government, closed on 1 February 2017. answer text <p>Sentencing guidelines are issued by the independent Sentencing Council for England and Wales. Following the announcement by the previous Justice Secretary of a government review of driving offences and penalties, the Sentencing Council have paused their review of sentencing guidelines for causing death by driving.</p><p> </p><p>The government is aware of concerns about a number of sentencing issues and is committed to making sure sentencing for driving crimes is proportionate within the context of our wider sentencing framework. It is our intention to commence a consultation in due course which will look at driving offences and penalties.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The Government has, in the Criminal Justice and Courts Bill,proposed that the maximum penalty for causing death by disqualified driving should rise from 2 years to 10 years' imprisonment. We are also creating a new offence of causing serious injury by disqualified driving which will have a 4 year maximum penalty.</p><p> </p><p>When the Government put forward these proposals to deal with the harm caused by disqualified drivers we also recognised that there were a number of other issues around bad driving which were of concern to many people. That is why the Government has announced a review of driving offences and penalties which will be carried out over the coming months.</p><p><strong> </strong></p><p> </p> more like this
