The UK and Argentina extended their tenure as Equal Rights Coalition (ERC) co-chairs by one year until June 2022 to compensate for the limitations imposed on many ERC governments during most of 2020 due to COVID 19. We welcome recent discussions between Iraqi and Turkish Defence Ministers regarding Ankara's military operations against the PKK in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. The safety of civilians is paramount and the UK continues to urge dialogue and cooperation between Iraq and Turkey to protect civilians. This was expected to be 1 May 2021. The UK has been in regular contact with the US on many issues, including Afghanistan. The Foreign Secretary discussed Afghanistan with US Secretary Blinken ahead of the US and NATO announcement on 14 April. We continue to call for an immediate end to attacks on civilians, as well as a significant reduction in violence as a pathway to a comprehensive ceasefire. We also underline to all sides that any political settlement must protect the progress made in the country, including protection for women and minorities.
